Awesome party game apps

The holidays are here, and if there is one thing that nearly everyone can relate to during this period it is time with family. But, after you have caught up on the usual talking points and you realize you have already watched everything worthwhile on TV, what else is there to do?

Well, my family is rather partial to games, and in recent years – rather than all trying to gather around a tiny board or scrambling to find enough pencils – we have been using apps. So, I thought I would put together a list of the best apps to get you through those awkward hours between the end of dinner and bed.

Heads Up! (iOS|Android)

Heads Up! is a great little app for both iOS and Android that only requires one device to play. The player just has to select a topic, read out the rounds rules, and then hold the phone to their forehead with the screen facing out. The screen then flashes up words that the audience must try and communicate to the player. When they get it right a quick tilt down grants them a point, while an upward one passes the question.

Heads Up!

What makes it so good is that your camera will be capturing all the action. Depending on the rules of the selected topic, this could see your family miming out actions, making sounds like animals, or trying to work out who exactly Solid Snake is – though that last one is only available if you have bought the additional videogame expansion.

Off Limits! | Taboo Like Party Game, Charades Guess Game (iOS)

A similar, but more traditional, version of Heads Up! is Off Limits! This game is based on the old card game Taboo, which itself is like a verbal version of charades.

Off Limits!

Again the goal here is for the player to pick a subject, and then the rest of the players have try to communicate a specific word to them – this time solely with words. The only catch is that on the card displayed on your phone or tablet is a list of words that can’t be used in the description. Less variety than the competition maybe, but better for lazy, after dinner play.

Reverse Charades (iOS|Android)

Following a similar format to the previous two games, Reverse Charades has you acting out the words on a card for a single player to guess. Its simple, and the basic game will be familiar to even your most tech adverse family members.

Reverse Charades

Being charades it is more active than most of the other games, so you may need some space and refreshments on hand – especially as the questions keep coming. A great way to help dinner go down.

Who Can’t Draw – Party game! (iOS|Android)

If you have ever played the game Pictionary and Telephone, then Who Can’t Draw should be quiet familiar. Given a clue, you have 15 seconds to create your best representation of it, before passing it on to the next player. The next player then must do the same thing, only they don’t get to see the clue. Instead all they see is your drawing, from which they must infer the original word – resulting in some very odd creations.

Who cant draw

This continues until the last player, who has to guess the word using all of the attempts. Good luck with that… although on the plus side you also get to nominate the best and worst drawer.

Mucho Party (iOS|Android)

If you are still enjoying talking to your family, but the younger members need something to distract them, then Mucho Party is the perfect choice. This collection of mini-games is bright, colorful, and stuffed with everything they could need to keep the kids quiet.

mucho party

Taking a snap shot of the players faces puts them into the action, and then they are ready to play any of the six modes – all of which are stuffed with games. With cars, soccer, fishing, dancing, and multiple other distractions built-in, you will find the full app offers something for everyone – and should keep your children quiet until someone gets upset because the lost.

Spaceteam (iOS|Android)

If you want to test the limits of your family’s communication abilities, then Spaceteam could be what you need. This is the first game on our list that requires multiple devices, but for good reason. Syncing your devices together, Spaceteam has you piloting a spaceship through the stars, each having to manage different aspects of the craft’s controls on your device.

spaceteam

Mum get ready to control the Sigmaclapper, dad prepare the Photolamps, grandma… put your glasses on… and get ready to tap buttons while communicate what has to happen next.

The Jackbox Party Pack games (PC|Mac)

There are now two releases of The Jackbox Party Pack, and both are fantastic. Each contains five different games, which range between 2 to 8 players. All are riotously good fun, forcing you to work together and mislead each other through games that can be comical or obscene depending on who is playing.

jackbox

The only real drawback to these games is that you need them on console or PC, with everyone connecting through a tablet or smartphone. Providing you have all the parts it’s incredibly simple and a real bargain for the fun you will have… if not it’s a touch pricy.

Evil Apples: A Filthy Adult Card & Party Game (iOS|Android)

Evil Apples demands a different kind of relationship with your family than many of the above… and it needs the children to be safely tucked up in bed. It takes the idea of popular physical card game Cards Against Humanity, and re-imagines them for the digital format.

Evil Apples

What is beautiful about this game is that winners are subjective. You have a set of randomly drawn answers that you must use to answer the questions, with points going to the person that a rotating judge believes is the funniest. Expect lots of jokes about first dates, “Yo Mama”, and poop – only you will know if your family find that funny or horrific.

Celebrating 25 years since the very first webpage

Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of the first webpage EVER! Although it was no technical wonder, lacking colors, design and images, it was based on the same concept containing text and links to information that we still use today.

The webpage was launched by Tim Berners-Lee on December 20th, 1990, in the CERN, although was not put online until the summer of 1991. The webpage explained the development of the WWW (World Wide Web), providing information and links. In fact, it’s still online and can be viewed here.

Berners-Lee and his team also developed what would have been one of the first web browsers ever, in order for them to view their webpage.

Although the CERN is better known today in the field of physics, it played a key role in the development of what we now know as the Internet in the 90s.

Could these be the worst Star Wars costumes ever?

The release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens shook the world over the weekend, as millions of us flocked to the cinema to take up where we left off all those decades ago. If you have made it to the cinema to see the movie, you may have been impressed by the costume efforts of certain movie-goers. Full Stormtrooper attire, Vader masks and the occasional brown “Jedi” bath robe were among the congregations, which just goes to show the passionate and devoted following the Star Wars saga has acquired in its almost-40 years of existence.

We thought we’d celebrate that passion and devotion in an alternative (and funnier) way, by taking a look at the worst Star Wars costumes of all time. Brace yourself!

Possibly more John Lennon than Chewbacca?

For those of you confused, the real Leia is on the right.

A cereal box can go a long way, although on this ocassion, it doesn’t seem to have gone far enough….

You have to give him credit for imagination and effort…

Wherever she is, she’s obviously having the time of her life.

A bit of alumnium foil can really give that realistic “carbonite encasing” look.

This guy has done an incredible job hiding any human-like features, and could easily be
mistaken for the short robot.

We don’t know why he even bothered…

Would you believe that that is actually a bucket on his head. Yes, a bucket!

“I look a bit like Jabba in my duvet” she said. “I’ve got a tiara”, said the other.

How to zoom on Sony Vegas Pro

Sony Vegas Pro is a professional video editing suite that can help you create high quality videos. The program has a lot of tools to edit your videos, and – because of this – it can be hard to get to grips with all of its features the first time you use it.

In this tutorial we will show you how to zoom in on parts of a video that you want to enlarge.

How to zoom with Sony Vegas Pro por softonic-en

To begin, just run the program and open a video you want to edit. After opening the video, go to the editing area and click on Event Pan/Crop. A pop-up window named “Video Event FX” will open.

Make sure that the button Sync Cursor is enabled, so that any changes made here also appear on the preview windows.

To zoom in you need to select the part of the video you want to edit , and with the help of the mouse and the arrow keys, locate the section that you want to extend and enlarge.

When you’ve zoomed in you will see a little diamond-shaped icon appear on the timeline. This icon marks the exact point where the zoom starts.

To return the video to its normal size, select the moment you want the zooming to stop and return the image to its original scale.

You will see another diamond-shaped icon appear on the timeline. Between the two icons is where the zoom effect occurs in your video.

Now you only have to watch the video preview to make sure that the zoom is fine.

Don’t forget to save your changes!

Star Wars 7: The awesome video uniting the main characters….singing!

The full cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens recently made an appearance on the Jimmy Fallon Show in the U.S.,  treating us all to an acapella performance of the various iconic songs taken from the movie’s soundtrack over the years.

The video lasts just under two minutes and shows all of the main actors showcasing their vocal talents: Daisy Ridley , John Boyega , Oscar Isaac , Adam Driver , Gwendoline Christie and Lupita Nyong’o , and of course not forgetting the robots, Chewbacca – even Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, our beloved Leia and Han Solo joined in the sing-song!

Click play and enjoy the show!

If you’re like us, and can’t wait for the premier of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, then why not enjoy this awesome lightsaber game that Google Chrome have recently come up with!

5 Holiday apps you must have

If all of the music, decorations, and number of parties hasn’t given it away yet – we are well and truly into the holiday season. But if you feel your digital life is not feeling as festive as your real one, then we have 5 Apps to change that.

ElfYourself (iOS|Web)

We start off with a classic app to get you in the mood, ElfYourself. This app offers the simple but consistently comical gimmick of having you paste pictures of your face on to the bodies of elves who then dance around in music videos. The results sit somewhere between hilarious and horrific, but they do consistently bring a smile to your face.

Talking Santa (Android|iOS)

Talking Santa is number two on our list. Coming from the team that created the ever-popular Talking Tom, the premise should be quite familiar – talk to the animated Santa, and he repeats your words back in a silly voice. Add to that the ability to create festive snapshots of Santa with the other members of the Talking series, and you have a perfect app for the kids.

Pandora (Windows|Android|iOS)

My family loves to sing when they are together, but it’s hard to escape the fact many of us are tone deaf. Luckily, music apps like Pandora are on hand to keep us on tune. Just type Holiday into Pandora a number of stations will pop up to help you celebrate on key. If you are not in a compatible territory, then you could always try TuneIn (find for your device) or Spotify (find for your device).

Touchnote (Android|iOS)

If you can’t be with your family during the holiday season then a card is always a good way to show people you haven’t forgotten them, and Touchnote is brilliant for this. This is the perfect balance of modern technology and classic cards, as you design the card on your phone and then pay Touchnote to print and send it directly to your loved ones.

Great British Chefs – Festive HD (iOS)

But, really, the best thing about this season is the food – and the best holiday recipe app we have found to help us is Great British Chefs – Festive HD. Filled with delicious meal ideas, deserts, and treats, this app is wonderfully presented and offers lots of helpful tips to ensure you can reproduce the results of these master chefs… which is lucky because some of them are tricky.

That’s it for our favorite festive apps, and indeed this year. I will be back on January 8th with the five best Antiviruses for 2016. Until then, have a wonderful holiday, and take care.

6 reasons Star Trek Beyond will be better than Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Through all of the noise surrounding Star Wars: The Force Awakens it can be hard to hear anything else in media at the moment. Indeed, you would probably find it hard to go from your house to a local shop without being assaulted multiple times by some form of advertising.

But there is an odd distraction for Sci-Fi fans wanting to engage with something other than the Force – Paramount just revealed that Star Trek Beyond is on the way, with the release of this trailer.

The trailer has already elicited some negative feedback already for is fast paced action not aligning with the classic, sociological focus of Gene Roddenberry’s series, but there is more here to be hopeful for than the bombastic 90 seconds of footage lets on. Which is why think there is a good chance that, ultimately, it is going to be better than The Force Awakens. Here is why.

1 – Simon Pegg

He’s lovely, British, adorable, and also a massive Star Trek fan who co-wrote this film. He has previously said he was not always happy with the action elements of the J.J. Abrahams reboot. Perhaps his pen on the script will have dialed these back, with the over-the-top action of the trailer taken from a few more dramatic scenes from the movie.

This could leave the bulk of the story to develop broader themes that the action could work in service of – rather than a as slave to. Certainly, a return to the deeper sociological plots seen in the original shows would be hard, but imagine if they drew on elements from episodes like Chain of Command… now that would be something.

2 – Bromance

If that isn’t the direction though, then there is another hope, and for doubters it will come from the oddest place – Justin Lin. Now, you probably had the same knee jerk reaction as me, “the director of the Fast and Furious franchise?  This is awful – he is going to take Star Trek even further even down the mindless action path”.

Trek love

But think, apart from cars, what is the Fast and Furious series known for… that’s right, camaraderie, and there is no greater bro-love triangle in history than Kirk, Spock, and Bones. Plus, this could place more emphasis on Karl Urban, which is always a good thing – especially when his McCoy is the most authentic thing in the new fiction.

3 – Not for kids, now need for 100s of action figures, it can stay with the crew and plot

Okay, none of that has addressed why this will beat The Force Awakens, but this will. Star Trek is not for kids. Sure, Paramount certainly want it to have wide appeal – but Star Trek has always been a franchise that people come to that little later in life, so it won’t have to pander or be tonally inconsistent just to appeal to kids.

This could also help to keep the story focused on just the key characters, without having to flitter around to give every new action figure their moment in the sun.

4 – The start of the five year mission, with actual exploration

Star Trek Beyond is the beginning of the five year mission that was the basis of the original TV show. It was a mission of exploration and discovery, but this crew has already encountered Klingons, genetically engineered humans, Romulans, and even – according to the terrible videogame – the Gorn.

Because of this it looks like they may have gone in the opposite direction, and are already discovering new races to make first contact with… and possibly be blown up by. It is true that the trailer makes it look like there is to be a lot of things exploding. Including the Enterprise. Again.

Idris? Is that you?

Even better, one of these races seems to include a villainous Idris Elba – possibly the guy above – which is always a good thing.

5 – The music is a call back, this maybe more thoughtful than a Guardians rip-off

Watch the trail, hear that music that makes you think that Justin Lin is just planning to rip off Guardians of the Galaxy? Well – while the use of a classic sound track could point to this in some ways -listen again, then watch the first new Star Trek movie again, this is James T. Kirks intro music.

That right, the first time we ever see Kirk as anything other than a baby – in this case as a tear away teen – this is the track he is listening to while he drives his stepfather’s car off a cliff. No, this doesn’t forgive using it, but it shows attention to this new fiction and proves that they are not just adding random tracks to make a more hard hitting trailer.

And finally…

6 – Motorbikes

Android games of the year, 2015

This week on Click-Swipe-Play I look back at 2015s three best Android games. And – like every other roundup we have done this year – there were an overwhelming amount to choose from. I am pretty sure we managed though, so here are the three games you absolutely must buy from the Google Play Store.

Fallout Shelter

With many eyes turned to Fallout 4 for game of the year, it is easy to forget the wonderful Fallout Shelter. This little resource management game had me, and everyone else in the office, hooked for weeks as we tried to rebuild civilization in a vault under the wasteland.

In fact, I am still checking in as Overseer of Vault 578. With 200 dwellers, all fully leveled, life is good there. I still enjoy micromanaging the existence of my wards, building them new rooms to inhabit, and sending them into the wilderness for supplies. Unfortunately, with more people comes more technical issues, and you will need a powerful device for a smooth late-game experience.

Despite this small issue, it is still great fun thanks to its intuitive interface and wonderful faux 50’s sci-fi look – making it easy to place among our three favorite Android games of the year.

Horizon Chase

Horizon Chase offers a wonderful hit of 80s nostalgia. Inspired by classics such as Outrun, this high-speed arcade racer feels both fresh and fast thanks to its crisp, modern visuals.

Tracks are stuffed full of opposition racers to start weaving your way through the moment the green light blinks on. With the car auto accelerating, all you have to worry about is steering down the winding track and knowing when to occasionally tap the break or unleash your turbo.

If there is a problem, it’s that Horizon Chase’s controls are a little too binary and don’t allow for too much finesse in the challenging later stages. A little practice, however, and you can master the art of gently feathering the break and directional controls to perfectly angel yourself through the crowds of cars.

Terra Battle

The last must have Android game of 2015 is Terra Battle, a game that offers an amazing blend of RPG and puzzle gameplay. You slide characters around a grid-based board to build your attacks, with the power stacking depending on your characters, their positions, and their specific abilities. This allows for a huge range of tactics as you build your squad of warriors and learn how they interact together.

Japanese RPG fans will also be interested to know that much of the game’s art and design concepts come from Hironobu Sakaguchi and with music from Nobuo Uematsu, both veterans of the Final Fantasy franchise.

Sadly, for all of its fantastic design, it should be mentioned that the story is pretty forgettable and filled with generic tropes – luckily the deep gameplay makes this easy to look past.

That’s our list, but as always if you think we missed something let us know the comments. We are taking a few weeks break for the holiday, but we will be back in the new year with the top Window exclusives of 2015 – subscribe not to miss that, and I will see you then!
