Take screenshots of a web page in a snap

Thumbs up to thumbalizrThere are a lot of times when I want to take a screengrab of the site I’m on, be it for posterity, to use for a blog post or for work purposes. However, I often simply can’t be bothered to load up a screen capture program and I end up just leaving it. I’ve just discovered a cool new online app though, called thumbalizr, which does the job for you in seconds without you needing to delve into your Program menu.

All you need to do is enter the URL of the site you want to capture then hit the ‘thumb it’ button. It only takes a few seconds to load, before a screenshot of your desired page is taken. You can then choose to save the image, selecting from a range of different resolutions. The service works really well and here’s hoping thumbalizr will release a version that lets you grab from your desktop in the near future.

No more spam calls or texts

MobisyMobisy’s Spam Manager promises that once downloaded you won’t get a single nuisance call or text message ever again, or at least not a spam one anyway. The program is able to intercept all calls and messages it views as spam and block them without you knowing. It does this by secretly and cleverly telling the phone if the number matches one that is listed as spam. It then either blocks the call or directs the message into a separate folder that you don’t need to worry about.

Get ready for the NFL season with some apps

TouchdownOne week to go till the start of the NFL season, with the New Orleans Saints playing the Colts in Indianapolis on September 6. Now I’ve got great memories of seeing the Chiefs play in -20 Celsius temperatures nearly twenty years ago and always get a bit excited when the season gets under way. This year it sounds like the Colts and Steelers will be strong again in the AFC and my bet in the NFC is on the Seahawks and the Bears, but you can never really tell until the season’s in full swing.

We’ve found some pretty good apps to get into the good’ol football mood. If you’re on Mac, you can set up the Football Widget on your Dashboard to get the program of all the games, see the results and follow your favorite team. For PC users the mySI application, while slightly cumbersome, will provide you a daily fix of football news, stats, photos and player search straight from Sports Illustrated. Want to feel like coaching legends Don Shula or Vince Lombardi? Take the hot seat and manage a football team in NFL Head Coach, organizing every aspects like tactics, player salaries and training.

Tackle the ancient game of backgammon

Play backgammon on your MacFew of today’s top-selling board games can claim to have been around for as long as backgammon, and the strategic past-time still has a cult following today. Not only is this Mac game an accurate digital recreation of backgammon with five different game modes, but it’s also a great tool for learning the nuances of the game thanks to its excellent tutorials.

Using Photoshop’s Layer Comps to improve workflow

Track version changes with Layer CompsMuch of the reason for Photoshop‘s worldwide success is down to the fact that it was one of the first graphics editors to make use of layers. The ability to compose an image using different overlays gives you near unlimited power, and credit to Adobe, the layers panel makes it very easy to manage the layers you’re using. However, there is a way to make it even easier to work on layered projects through the ‘Layer Comps’ feature within the CS version of the app.

Instead of having to create multiple documents in order to track changes to a project, Layer Comps allow you to manage different versions of your graphics from a single workspace. Photoshop Lab provides a very succinct introduction to the feature, explaining how it can be use to bolster your workflow.

One ingenius Layer Comps utility locked within Photoshop that not too many people know about is the ‘Layer Comps to PDF’ tool, which lets you export the different stages of your design to PDF to share with others. Having seen this in action, I can see this being a great tool for Web and graphic designers who are being constantly hassled by clients to provide updates on progress, or who want alternative mock-ups of a design.

Back to school: Firefox Campus Edition

Firefox Campus EditionWe’ve had a couple of posts here in the last few days about getting ready to go back to school and start college, well here’s another especially for those students heading to university. Firefox is offering a bundle of software entitled Firefox Campus Edition. It comes complete with Foxy Tunes allowing you to search for music, videos and lyrics whatever your tastes; Zotero, a really handy research tool allowing you to make reference notes with links while you are researching; and Stumbleupon which guarantees to find the very best websites based on your interests. Feel the burn with fitness software

We may be in the tail end of the northern summer but that’s no excuse to let that beach-trim body go to ruin. Stay fit through autumn and winter and you’ll find it much easier to be in shape for next summer! With this in mind, I’ve been taking a look at the many programs and web apps out there which are dedicated to training and fitness. I’m not talking about yoga software or feel-good positive thinking sites: this is about the software which screams “No pain no gain!” at you when you’re flagging. Not literally of course, as that would be awful.
