Reasons to get into Opera

Opera logoNo, I’m not talking about the Three Tenors, I’m talking about the browser which seems to have been around for ages but has never really made a big splash in a market dominated by Internet Explorer and Firefox. However, if you’re someone who has never really given it a chance, then you should take a second look. Opera is one of those browsers that people either love or don’t really care for much but there are a few downloads on Softonic to help get you started.

First of course is the Opera browser itself. Opera began life in Norway as far back as 1994 and was in fact the first browser to introduce tabbed browsing. In fact, I remember a friend showing me this feature around 5 years ago and I dismissed him as “fancy pants”. Nowadays, I couldn’t live without it and it’s standard in both Firefox and IE. Other things that Opera has pioneered include mouse gesturing – basically navigating web pages using only the mouse – and integration with torrents and IM clients. The big drawbacks of Opera, especially in it’s early days, were that it took some time getting used to because it was such a radical departure from conventional browsers and also, it was rather slow.

Those days are long gone now though and today it comes with widgets enabling you to check everything from the weather to performing currency conversions plus many more that are being developed constantly by it’s devoted users. It also allows you to zoom in and out of web pages more effectively than the leading browsers in my opinion although it still remains only the 5th most popular browser in the world, behind IE, Firefox, Safari and Netscape. However, in the mobile market, it’s had far more success and is one of the most popular browsers for those on the move.

Talking of which, if you are on the move but don’t want to use Opera on a mobile device, then just put it on a USB stick with Opera USB. This ultra stripped down version of Opera managed to maintain all the functionality – integrated IM client, e-mail client and security features – without losing the functionality. If you’re worried about taking your passwords on the road or if you’ve simply forgotten them whilst you’re out and about, then you can also try using Opera Password Recovery which attempts to recover any password you’ve used in Opera whilst browsing sites. It even works if you’ve flushed the cache although many sites have grown wise to it and you’ll find it won’t be able to retrieve every time.

So if you’ve grown a bit bored of your current browser, consider spending a night with the Opera and you may find it music to your fingertips.

A quick way to free up disk space

Free up disk spaceThere are many ways to free up disk space in Windows, most of which involve installing a third-party application that will scan your system and display all those elements that are suitable of being safely removed. But Windows also has its own cleaning app, a simple tool that you can use to erase redundant data and unused files, thus regaining some valuable megabytes back.

To run the Windows embedded cleaning application, right click on your hard drive’s icon and select Properties. Then click on Disk Cleanup and wait until the system calculates the space you’ll be able to free up after running the wizard.

Once the analysis is done, you’ll be presented with a list of elements that can be safely erased from your computer, along with the space you’ll regain after deleting them. This list includes items such as temporary Internet files, log files and the contents of the Recycle bin, among others. Simply select what you want to delete and click on OK.

This Disk Cleanup tool also offers information about each item, just to make sure you know what you’re erasing. Also, on the More Options tab you’ll find other Windows native apps that can help you make some space on your hard drive:

  • the Windows Components Wizard, to remove optional Windows elements
  • the Add or Remove Programs tool, to delete apps you no longer use
  • the System Restore tool, which basically erases everything up to the most recent restore point (hey, you said you wanted to free up disk space, didn’t you?)

How to: Access BitTorrent at the office

Bittorrent logoOk, so you’ve finished all your work for the day and have exploited all the possibilities of Freecell or Solitaire on your office PC. You know that P2P and BitTorrent downloading are not allowed in your company, but heck, you’ve decided you’re still going to take the risk to enjoy the greater bandwidth which your home connection will never match. If so, you’ll find useful the following five tips written up by NewTeeVee.

Most of these probably won’t hide the fact that you’re suddenly hogging a huge amount of bandwidth but are a good way of hiding your activity. If you get questioned just make sure you have a very solid excuse prepared (like, I’ve been listening to an online radio stream… intensely) or be prepared to face the consequences.

Here goes for NewTeeVee’s tips:

  • Download torrents from your browser. NewTeeVee suggest using the Java applet over at Bitleg.org. Just find a torrent metafile url from a torrent site, paste it into the box and you’re ready to go. We believe you can also use uTorrent straight from its web interface. If you have Firefox installed and can add extensions you can try using either FoxTorrent or FireTorrent. Opera also features an inbuilt torrent client.
  • Start BitTorrent from a USB drive. Another way of avoiding the installation of a BitTorrent client onto your PC, is to have your client on a USB drive. Here again, uTorrent is so small that it can easily fit on any USB key. You can run it directly from the key as it needs no installation.
  • Encrypt your BitTorrent traffic. If you really are a little crazy, you’ve actually had the nerves to install a torrent client onto your office PC. In that case your safest bet is simply to encrypt your BitTorrent traffic. If you’re using Azureus you can set this up directly from the settings. Newteevee also suggest following this guide from TorrentFreak.
  • Remotely control your home PC. The latest versions of some BitTorrent clients will allow you to control their interface straight from the web, even if they are on another PC. Once again the web UI from the uTorrent client can let you download at home but control it from your PC office. Transmission with the Clutch WebUI and Azureus for Mac with its WebUI plug-in also let you do this. More technical users will also try to actually control their home PC via LogMeIn, but that might just take too much time and hassle.
  • Outsource your torrents. A remote private server, also known as a seedbox, can handle all your BitTorrent downloads and serve them to you as simple http downloads as soon as they are done. This is probably the most harmless way as you are not hogging any bandwidth and not actually wasting company time on torrent sites. Furk.net and a slew of other companies do this, however do keep in mind that you’ll have to pay up for the service.

IP management made easy

IP addressYour IP address is the only thing that distinguishes you from millions of other users on the Internet so it’s worth knowing how to manage it properly. For network administrators, it’s absolutely essential in ensuring that users can be easily identified and there are no IP conflicts on the same network.

One of the best packs for doing this is IP-Tools which brings together a collection of IP related utilities. Via a simple but easy to use interface, you can view and test advanced data relating to your own IP and TCP data or those connected to your network. IP Sniffer is a similar pack which analyses the packets sent and received by your IP which is useful in diagnosing connection problems.

Maybe you’re having trouble with a suspicious IP address invading your PC or attacking your website? If so, one way to trace them is using Visual IP Trace which shows via a map of the Earth exactly where the intruder is coming from. If the attacks are piercing your Firewall, then consider using Iparmor which looks for and blocks suspicious IP addresses on your PC. Finally, if you’re wondering whether your ISP is routing your IP suspiciously, try TraceAlarm which monitors your IP for unusual packets that are sent or received from your PC.

Tips and tools to help you with the elements

Periodic TableThe Periodic Table was probably one of the scariest things I ever dealt with at school. I couldn’t remember my Na’s from my Fr’s which lead to some experiments that went horribly wrong in the classroom.

If some of this software had been around at the time, I may not have blown up so many Bunsen burners. For straightforward learning of the table, you can’t do much better than Periodic Table which includes an image for each element and even the history of who discovered it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t include a test though but once you’ve learned them properly, you can use ProKon to see how well you’ve absorbed them.

Want to know how the different elements react under different conditions? EniG. Periodic Table of Elements is great for seeing how they perform depending on the temperature they are subjected to. If you’re a professional scientists or studying advanced science, then you’ll appreciate something a bit more substantial like Integral Scientist Periodic Table. This fully comprehensive table has information based on all kind of variables and can be searched by Periodic symbol or element number. Finally, if you have to perform complex equations with the elements, then PL Table has a powerful chemical equation balancer which ensures that you don’t combine any dangerous elements in the lab.

Use Google Maps to check the weather

When it comes to checking weather forecasts on your PC there are a lot of possible alternatives at your fingertips, from dedicated websites to all sorts of software apps. But we’ve still got an ace up our collective sleeve: you can also use Google Maps to see what the weather will be like in the next few days anywhere in the world. Want to know how?

Simply load Google Maps on your favorite browser and click on the My Maps tab. Then, in the Featured Content list, enable the Weather Channel option. Your map will be immediately changed to a weather map with an array of icons to show weather conditions and temperature around the globe. If you click on any of those icons, you’ll get a fully detailed weather report about that given location, including temperature, wind speed, humidity and the UV index.

Weather forecast in Google Maps

The Google Maps Weather Channel can be customized to display points of interest and overlay layers. Also, you can choose to have temperature displayed in ºC or ºF. So next time you need to check weather forecast remember that Google may have the right answer – again.

Control the volume with your mouse

Logitech VX Nano front scroll wheelOne of the greatest inventions of humanity has got to be the wheel. The scroll wheel, some PC users might suggest. Well, although this technical addition is probably not as world rocking as the creation of the wheel, it has changed the way we work with our mouse. With it you can move through documents or web pages at the speed of light, zoom in or quickly switch weapons in your favorite video game. Honestly, for me not a day goes by when I don’t find myself using it to speed through files. Apart from scrolling through documents, what else can you do with your scroll wheel then?

For those of you who still don’t have a recent multimedia keyboard fitted with all sorts of buttons for volume, brightness or quick forward/back, you should find some utility in a little program called Volumouse (that is, if your mouse is fitted with a scroll wheel).

This nifty little app lets you associate macros/actions with scroll wheel movements, usually combining them with a specific key. After initial startup you’ll be able to configure it, setting up what component each mouse movement acts upon. For example, associate scroll wheel movement with the Alt button to control your menu. Scroll up and it gets louder, scroll down and it gets quieter. Simple, no? Or mute/unmute every time you click the scroll wheel and Ctrl at the same time. There’s all sorts of combinations you can do and many components in your PC you can work with. Like controlling brightness of your screen or the transparency level of a selected window. It all really depends on you.

How to chat via Bluetooth

Bluetooth: the future of communication? As crazy as it sounds in this day and age, I’m running out of ways to communicate with people. I’ve outgrown instant messaging, got fed up with racking up bumper phone bills, and email is just far too passé for me. So, I’ve taken to harnessing the power of Bluetooth to chat with people now – it’s instant, it’s free, it’s discreet and I love it. Besides being a handy way of silently conversing with pals at work or in the cinema, Bluetooth messaging is also great for making new friends in a library or chatting up someone in a crowded nightclub, because you can hook up with anyone who has a Bluetooth-enabled phone.

It’s dead easy to do too. All you need is to switch your Bluetooth on, and install a chat program such as BuZZone, SYMPTChat, or Bluetooth Chat. I prefer BuZZone as I find it the most simple and fun to use of the three. To get started, you just define a username then scan the radio coverage of your Bluetooth transmitter for other users. Once you’ve hooked up with someone you can send and receive text messages as well as voice, insert emoticons, and exchange files.

At present these apps are a far cry from the all-singing, all-dancing desktop IM applications of today. However, Bluetooth chat is still a very practical way to talk and you can always inject a little more fun into your interactions by playing one of the many free wireless games such as Bluetooth Darts, 4Connect or ace soccer sim, The Match.

Make Windows clipboard better, faster, stronger

Windows Clipboard on steroidsCopying and pasting are probably the two most frequent actions you perform during a working session with the computer. The Windows clipboard is thus an essential tool for all sorts of tasks, saving you loads of typing and time.

But despite its usefulness I still find the clipboard quite limited in functions, as it only allows you to copy and paste one single element at a time. Fortunately there are plenty of programsº that can easily improve the clipboard’s functionality and storage capacity, turning it into a really helpful tool for all your daily computer tasks. Take a look at the following list and make your choice!

  • Clipboard Help+Spell – Save clipboard entries into a searchable database with text formatting capabilities, hierarchical structure and a powerful spell check.
  • M8 Multi Clipboard – Store up to 25 items on this extended clipboard for pasting in your documents at any moment.
  • Multi Clipboard – Have up to 9 different clipboard text snippets ready to be used either via mouse click or by means of a keyboard shortcut.
  • Clipboard Recorder – Save multiple clipboard entries for later usage. It supports transferring data between computers.
  • ClipX – Store up to 1,024 items on your Clipboard and use them whenever you want, with support for both text and graphics.
  • ClipDiary – Save clipboard history and record data in several formats, including TXT, RTF and even images in BMP.
  • ClipMagic – Store multiple clipboard items in a convenient categorized structure with extended information about each clip.
