Age of Empires II: why we are still hooked so many years later

Why do we still love the work of Ensemble Studios?

If you are already combing some gray hair, or simply a lover of real-time strategy games, if you say the following three syllables you will know which game they belong to: “Wololo“. It is one of the most repeated words of Age of Empires and its myth, to such an extent that brands like Red Bull have been organizing a championship like Red Bull Wololo for more than five years.

Age of Empires is timeless. Although more than 25 years have passed since its first installment, the strategy title continues to enchant millions of players around the world, particularly with Age of Empires II, its second part. But what makes it so special? Why is it 2023 and why is it arriving today, January 31, on Xbox and the cloud?

A simple but complex scheme

When people talk about “simplicity”, this is usually taken in a negative way. Something “simple” does not have to be bad. This is one of the biggest mistakes made in our day-to-day lives. “Simple” means that it has no complications or difficulties. Age of Empires II became so popular for, precisely, being simple (and don’t load the gun so fast, which is also complex).

The game starts from a very simple premise -which at the same time is simple-: you must obtain material resources to create buildings and military units. That’s it. Once you have these on the map you are playing, you must confront the enemies, either defending your territory or attacking them to defeat the rival base.

So much for this “simple” approach. Now comes the complex one. Behind this game design mechanic lies an enormous complexity, since each unit has its own characteristics, in addition to the fact that the terrain also has its own exclusive specifications. To this we must add a layer of resource management very exaggerated depending on the difficulty in which we are. The materials on the stage are finite, so we must know how to manage them correctly. You can not go crazy cutting down trees, as there will come a time when there are no more on the map.

Age of Empires II worked – and works – so well because of this: the game has an escalation component where the player sets his level of experience. The more demanding you are, the more you will learn, the more you will internalize and the more you will get out of it. However, if you just want to create units and send them to fight, the game will not prevent you from doing so; and in fact, you will most likely emerge victorious from that battle. You set the bar where you see fit.

Civilizations as a trademark

The playable proposal offered by Age of Empires II dazzled millions and was taken to dozens of video games in a similar way. However, there was another point that made the work of the now defunct Ensemble Studios stand out: the large number of civilizations that could be played with, each one more varied than the last.

In the definitive edition now released on Xbox there will be up to 35 different civilizations. They all respond to a series of common patterns: they have different stages of evolution depending on their age, there are common units for melee and ranged combat, and they are all created in the same way (with in-game materials). However, the difference is that each civilization has some exclusive units, as well as being specialized in certain fields.

Thanks to this heterogeneity present in the game, a player can choose, for example, the Japanese, while another goes to the other side of the planet and selects the Teutons. Players can keep those civilizations that suit them best according to their style of play or simply for pure aesthetic taste. And here is another point of support: the multiplayer.

Age of Empires II appealed to so many because it allowed for fast and vibrant multiplayer experiences. Seeing a scout arrive from afar that belonged to another faction was frightening. And yes, it could be a unit that didn’t have great attack power, but the fear was represented through another aspect such as being spotted. We were no longer invisible on the map: now they knew where we were.

It was time to prepare for battle as quickly as possible: if it was a map with water, create a port to have good support ships; if there were mountains, place long-range units; if it was a steppe, have good cavalry to go in for the kill. Strategies were developing and the games against other players were vibrating by themselves.

Why did we like -and we like- Age of Empires II so much? Because so many years later, the pillars of real-time strategy have hardly moved since this title internalized them -not created them, be careful with this- with its game system. That’s why we keep playing: because it’s still as good as ever.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Arrives on Disney+ Just 80 Days Apart

As we are used to, Disney+ and Marvel Studios bring us the news of the Marvel Universe with a brief wait regarding its release in theaters The second part of Black Panther was released worldwide on November 11. 80 days later, on February 1, it premieres exclusively on the Disney Plus platform. Undoubtedly, a real treat for fans of Casa de las Ideas films.

Black Panther: Wakanda For Ever not only had the challenge of overcoming an incredible first part, winner of 3 Oscars, but also had to reinvent itself due to the death of its leading actor Chadwick Boseman. Both due to the criticism received, as well as the reception of the public and its numbers at the box office, it seems to have succeeded.

In this installment, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba) fight to protect their nation from world powers who intervene after the death of King T’Challa. Having the most valuable material on earth, vibranium, puts them under pressure from other nations.

As the Wakandans strive to embark on a new chapter, the heroes must unite with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) to forge a new path for the Wakandan kingdom. In addition, they will have to face the threat of Namor (Tenoch Huerta), king of a hidden underwater nation that will have a fundamental role in the future of Wakanda.

Black Panther: Forever Wakanda, box office and critical success

With $820 million in theaters worldwide, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has become the second highest-grossing Marvel feature film of 2022. It was only surpassed by Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness and improving the numbers of Thor: Love and Thunder (both available on Disney +).

Although it has been far from the success of the first installment, which became the 15th.th highest-grossing film in the history of cinema, the result is more than satisfactory. And although Black Panther won three Oscars in 2019, this installment could surpass it, since it has obtained the following 5 nominations for the next Oscar Awards

On the other hand, Marvel Studios has made history by winning its first Golden Globe. On January 10, Angela Bassett received the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance as Queen Ramonda. On March 13 we will know if the Black Panther saga continues to expand the award window after the celebration of the 2023 Oscars gala.

Direction and cast of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is directed by Ryan Coogler and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore. The script was written by Ryan Coogler himself, accompanied by Joe Robert Cole. The music was provided by Ludwig Göransson, who had the collaboration of Rihanna for the main song of the film in what became a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman.

Rounding out the production team are Autumn Durald Arkapaw in photography and Michael P. Shawver, Kelley Dixon and Jennifer Lame in the montage. In the part of the cast it has the participation of Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena, Martin Freeman, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livanalli.

Remember, on February 1 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will join the extensive streaming catalog of Disney Plus, where you will also find all the movies and series of the Marvel Universe. If you are not yet subscribed, sign up with the annual subscription and get 12 months at the price of 10.

You, fourth season (February 9)

While Netflix doesn’t seem to have too much confidence in its series lately, You seems to be the exception that proves the rule. The series starring Penn Badgley returns for a fourth season and will be divided into two parts. The first will arrive on February 9 and the second is scheduled for March 9. The end of the third season meant a reboot for Joe, who is “dead” in the eyes of the world. Thus, Joe starts a life in Paris under the identity of Nick.

Love to Hate You (February 10)

Netflix brings us this Korean romantic comedy starring Kim Ok-vin, Yoo Teo and Kim Ji-hun. Its synopsis goes like this: a lawyer who hates losing to men and a famous actor who distrusts women cross paths and must pretend they are together. How long can they put up with that facade?

In Love All Over Again (February 14)

This premiere, dedicated to Valentine’s Day, comes from Carlos Montero, creator of Élite and The Mess You Leave Behind. Starring Georgina Amorós and Franco Masini, the film tells the story of a young woman who is about to become a film director. Her adventures (and misadventures) in the Madrid of the 2000s include a dash of comedy, romance and drama.

The Law According to Lidia Poët (February 15)

Based on a true story, the Italian series The Law according to Lidia Poët tells the story of Lidia Poët’s struggle to become a registered lawyer. At the time, however, it was a profession reserved only for men. However, nothing can stop her ambition.

Red Rose is a thriller that hits our screens on February 15. A group of young people face a terrifying summer after downloading a sinister app. It threatens them with lethal consequences if they don’t do what they are ordered to do from the app.

The Upshaw Family, Season Three (February 16)

The Upshaws star in a sitcom that won over thousands of viewers in its first season. This comedy focuses on the life of a working-class African-American family struggling to survive with the means at their disposal.

Aggretsuko says goodbye to us with its fifth and final season. We still know little about what will come, beyond some images that the creative team shared on Twitter during the celebration of Tudum, a Netflix event.

Aggretsuko, fifth season (February 16)

Palermo Division (February 17)

The new Argentine comedy, Palermo Division, has been created by Santiago Korovsky, who also stars in it. In its official synopsis, we can read that: the members of a peculiar unarmed urban guard, created to improve the image of the Police, risk their lives while dealing with some very strange criminals.

Triad (February 22)

Tríada is the new telenovela starring Maite Perroni, mythical Mexican actress from Rebelde. Her character has several personalities that will tell her story from different perspectives. In addition, the plot is written by Leticia López Margalli, the creator of Oscuro Deseo.

Films

Infiesto (February 3)

The thriller is one of the genres that gathers more viewers within Netflix. Now, the platform adds to its catalog the new film by Patxi Amezcua, director of films such as Séptimo. In Infiesto, we will see how the reappearance of a young woman who had been “dead” for months is investigated. As if that were not enough, this whole situation will be aggravated by the state of emergency, which was declared in March 2020 in Spain.

Free Spirit (February 3)

According to the synopsis we can read on Netflix: in Free Spirit we have a tenacious Australian teenager, who must face her fears to make her dream come true: to be the youngest person to circumnavigate the world solo.

Your Place Or Mine (February 10)

Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher star in this romantic comedy, ideal for Valentine’s Day viewing. Directed by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses), it tells the story of Debbie and Peter, two best friends who exchange very different lives. In doing so, they discover that what they thought they wanted was not what they needed.

All the Places (February 14)

After the death of her father, Gabriela and Fernando meet again after fifteen years without seeing each other. Together, they embark on a journey across Mexico on a motorcycle to fulfill a childhood dream. The film is based on the German film 25 km/h by Markus Goller and changes several things, such as the dynamics of the protagonists and the setting where it takes place (in this case, Mexico).

We Have a Ghost (February 24)

The plot of We Have a Ghost follows a family who, after encountering a ghost with a shady past, becomes a viral phenomenon. However, it will not only attract netizens, but also a somewhat strange government agency. David Harbour plays the ghost Ernest and Anthony Mackie is the father of the family who wants to squeeze (monetarily) as much as possible out of his unexpected tenant.

Apple’s Crash Detection Causes Chaos with 100 False Emergency Calls

The iPhone 14 was marketed with a new Crash Detection feature, designed to call emergency services if the phone detects the user has been in a severe car accident. But since its release, reports have arisen of instances where the feature gave false positive alerts.

The fire department in Kita-Alps, Nagano, Japan reported receiving 134 false emergency calls in the past month, primarily due to the iPhone 14’s Crash Detection feature inaccurately triggering as skiers went down the slopes. This places unnecessary stress on emergency services.

During that one-month period, the Japanese emergency services received 919 calls, with about 100 of them being false positives triggered by the iPhone 14’s Crash Detection feature, accounting for over 10% of their total workload. The iPhone 14’s Crash Detection feature is also causing false positive triggers during winter sports in the US, and rollercoaster rides.

iPhone crash detection feature makes 100 false emergency calls

These activities, characterized by high speed and impacts, are being mistakenly detected as driving patterns and car crashes by the phone’s algorithms.

Apple is working with local emergency services that receive frequent false calls from the iPhone’s Crash Detection feature. They are trying to find ways to reduce these errors. When the iPhone thinks there’s a crash, a loud warning siren starts a countdown before an emergency call is placed. However, during activities like skiing or rollercoasters, the user might not hear the siren and may not cancel the call, causing it to go through.

Despite the issue of false positive triggers, the iPhone’s Crash Detection feature has been praised for its ability to quickly alert emergency services in real car crash situations, as seen in a recent case reported by ABC News in Australia. The quick response of emergency services due to the Crash Detection technology highlights its potential benefits. Apple has taken steps to improve the accuracy of the feature, including optimizations in the iOS 16.1.2 release.

The Crash Detection feature is available on several Apple devices, including iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and various generations of Apple Watch. To turn it off, go to settings, select Emergency SOS and disable the “Call After Serious Crash” setting. However, it’s recommended to leave the feature enabled as it has the potential to help save lives in case of a serious accident.

Sad News for The Addams Family Fans: Lisa Loring, the First Wednesday Addams, Dies at 64

Actress Lisa Loring has died at the age of 64 after being disconnected from life support due to a stroke.

A black Monday for the acting world. This morning the death of actress Lisa Loring was announced at the age of 64. The actress who gave life to the character of Wednesday Addams in the Addams Family series of the 60s was connected to life support for several days after suffering a stroke.

Her friend Laure Jacobson communicated the news in a Facebook post: “It is with great sadness that I report the death of our friend Lisa Loring. 4 days ago she suffered a massive stroke caused by smoking and hypertension. She had been on life support for 3 days. Yesterday, her family made the difficult decision to remove her and she passed away last night.”

With a long acting career, Loring’s work became known recently after the great success of Wednesday, the Netflix series where Jenna Ortega plays the character for which she would be recognized in later years. The Addams Family series, broadcast between 1964 and 1966, was the first live-action adaptation to be made of this peculiar family created by American cartoonist Charles Addams.

After the end of the series, which only ran for two seasons, the actress appeared in several TV shows and series, such as The Pruitts of Southampton, The Phyllis Diller Show, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., Fantasy Island, Barnaby Jones and As the World Turns. She returned once again in the role of Wednesday for the film Halloween with the Addams Family in 1977, and her last role was in 2015, in the film Doctor Spine.

A death that joins that of Annie Wersching, who gave life to the character of Tess in the video game The Last of Us, at the age of 45. The actress left us last night after failing to overcome a cancer she was diagnosed with in 2020, and her family has enabled a GoFoundMe to cover the medical costs she will have to bear.

Enter the World of Virtual Streaming: The VTubers Dominating Twitch!

With each passing year, the line between the virtual world and the real world is becoming increasingly blurred. Reality has ceased to be something attractive for many, who live their best life through the Internet. And if not, just tell that to the VTubers, the most virtual content creators.

This phenomenon, originally from Japan, has not stopped gaining followers wherever it goes. With an aesthetic generally reminiscent of anime, VTubers hide behind virtual avatars that they use for streaming. They interpret and speak through them, without the need to show their real face. Today, let’s take a look at the most followed and popular VTubers on YouTube and Twitch.

La popular VTuber Kizuna AYo tendrá un proyecto de anime — Kudasai

Kizuna AI

Kizuna AI is one of the most recognized names in the VTuber scene. This Japanese virtual YouTuber (and now streamer) debuted on November 29, 2016 and since then, she has become quite a sensation. She also holds the honor of having been the world’s first virtual YouTuber.

Kizuna AI has three YouTube channels: A.I. Channel China, A.I. Games and loveちゃんねる, which accumulate more than 3 million subscribers and 400 billion views. The Kizuna AI character was created through the Miku Miku Dance program. This program is also known for being behind one of the world’s most popular vocaloids, Hatsune Miku. Kizuna AI has even made Newsweek Japan’s “most respected Japanese people in the world” lists. To top it all off, an anime based on him will be released in 2023, but we don’t know the date yet.

Gawr Gura

Gawr Gura is another one of the most popular virtual YouTubers in the VTuber space. Currently, Gawr Gura is the VTuber with the most subscribers within YouTube, with over 4.26 million. However, she also has her niche on Twitch, where she has almost 40. ooo followers.

Thanks to her rather joking and friendly personality, she has managed to win the hearts of thousands of viewers around the world. She debuted on her YouTube channel on September 13, 2020 and behind her is Hololive, a virtual idol company.

Nimu Spacecat

This Argentinian YouTuber and streamer is one of the most famous in the Spanish-speaking world. Her live shows started in February 2020 and she can often be seen playing or chatting with her followers. She has reached peaks of more than 50,000 viewers, figures that only the most popular streamers in the world can reach.

Despite what we may see at first glance, Nimu Spacecat is not the character you see in the live shows exactly. Nimu is actually the small alien cat that stands on the girl’s head. This cat made of slime controls the figure, which is also called Centi.

As it usually happens with VTubers, they generate a buzz because many times you don’t know who the person behind them is. Nimu caused a stir in one of her live shows by showing her face by mistake.

Mori Calliope

Mori Calliope is part of an English batch created by Hololive. The streamer is characterized by having one of the deepest voices in the VTuber scene and describes herself as “the first apprentice of the Grim Reaper”.

Thanks to the success of VTubers in Japan, Hololive conducted a casting to find new talent for the English market. Mori Calliope was discovered through these auditions and her channel was created on July 16, 2020. However, it would not be until September 8, 2020 when we saw her for the first time in a promotional video together with other VTubers, collectively called HoloMyth.

Mori Calliope currently has over 2 million subscribers on her YouTube channel and became the third VTuber to achieve this feat, alongside Kazuna AI and Gawr Gura. Calliope is also deep into the world of music and even has an album out, UnAlive.

Neuro Sama

Neuro Sama has caught the attention of many people and Twitch users for a special reason: she is the first VTuber who is an artificial intelligence. Created by programmer Vedal987, her abilities to play video games like Minecraft have managed to surprise everyone who sees her in action.

Since her debut, Neuro Sama has gained thousands of followers on Twitch. However, she was recently involved in controversy due to some anti-Semitic statements. Denying the existence of the Holocaust was one of her many pearls that earned her a ban from Twitch (and rightly so). Her programmer stated that he was working on Neuro Sama to refine her behavior and prevent her from making inappropriate comments in the future.

Spider-Man is Back and Better Than Ever in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2!

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is coming to PlayStation 5 later this year with a confirmed release date, storyline, and improved gameplay. The first game, Marvel’s Spider-Man by Insomniac Games, received widespread praise when it was released in 2018 and marked the developer’s unique take on Peter Parker.

The follow-up, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, released in 2020, continued from where Marvel’s Spider-Man left off and showed Miles, a Brooklyn teen, becoming a competent superhero.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was officially announced in September 2022 during a PlayStation Showcase Livestream with the return of both the creative and game director. The initial trailer showed Peter and Miles working together to combat new dangers, including Venom. Since then, more information about the story, gameplay, and release date has been gradually revealed.

The exact release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has not been announced, but the trailer from two years ago indicated a 2023 launch. Insomniac confirmed a Fall 2023 release last year, which was later backed up by a writer for Marvel’s Wolverine. The actors playing Peter Parker and Miles, Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jeter, respectively, have also expressed excitement for the game and support the likely Fall 2023 release.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 set to release in the Fall

The in-engine release trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, utilizing the PS5’s advanced technology, showcases the game’s improved performance and graphics. In the trailer, Peter Parker and Miles Morales fight against a group of criminals at night near a diner, displaying their impressive combat skills, web gadgets, and Venom Blast abilities.

A deep, Russian-accented voice is heard in the background, suggesting that he’s been waiting for a challenge and asking if anyone can defeat him. However, it’s not one of the Spider-Men who answers.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 set to release in the Fall

Instead, a menacing voice growls “Yes…we will.” After defeating the criminals, Peter and Miles turn to a dark alley where Venom, previously hinted at in post-credit scenes, appears from the shadows. It was confirmed that Tony Todd, known from Candyman and The Flash, is providing Venom’s voice. The trailer also shows Peter using mechanical spider arms to defeat enemies and Miles using his electrical Venom Blast energy to defend against attacks.

The costumes of Peter and Miles have been upgraded for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, particularly Miles’s. Peter’s Advanced Suit from the first two games is a darker shade of red with a white spider emblem in the chest, while Miles’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales suit is slightly darker with red lines extending down the arms.

Venom is briefly shown in the trailer, appearing as a massive figure similar to Tom Hardy’s version in the live-action Venom films, accurately reflecting the comics. The trailer strongly suggests that the story of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will feature Peter and Miles battling against Venom.

While we don’t have every ounce of information about the new game yet, it promises to be a wild ride.

EU launches Digital Wallet: an application to have EVERYTHING on your mobile

Discover all the advantages that will come with the official Digital Wallet of the European Union.

Being part of the European Union brings its advantages, just ask the British after Brexit. From being able to pass through the borders of almost all of Europe with just your ID card to the management of taxes, it seems that all are benefits. What we didn’t think is that it would also be an advantage on a practical and day-to-day level.

The EU has just presented the creation of an app called European Digital Identity Wallet, which is nothing more than an official Digital Wallet that everyone can have on their cell phone. This system will serve for all kinds of functions, including:

  • Make official payments such as fines or taxes.
  • Have direct access to your bank to pay other procedures.
  • Save passwords.
  • Have access to all your official documents: passport, ID, driver’s license, etc.
  • Carry out official government business.
Digdir to lead multi-country consortium on piloting payments in EU Digital Identity Wallet | Digdir

When will the Digital Wallet arrive?

Although the project is officially underway, it will not be released until 2024. Right now, tests are being carried out by NOBID (Nordic-Baltic eID Project), a conglomerate of northern European countries consisting of Germany, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Latvia and Denmark. Starting in March of this year, many citizens of these countries will have access to the wallet, and it will be extended to other countries in the following months.

All the countries chosen are pioneers in the digitization of documents (for example, 90% of Norwegian citizens already use the electronic ID card). Therefore, it seems to be the ideal place to test an initiative that is expected to land in Spain sooner rather than later.

Heartbreaking Farewell: Annie Wersching, Star of ‘The Last of Us’, Dead at 45

The American actress dies of cancer that was detected in 2020.

We woke up today Monday with very sad news: Annie Wersching has passed away at the age of 45. Stephen Full, the actress’s husband, has been in charge of giving this statement last night, where he points out that the American actress has not been able to overcome the cancer that, unfortunately, she suffered from and that she was diagnosed with in 2020 (and from which she reported herself).

Wersching was now, precisely, on everyone’s lips. The actress had the privilege of playing Tess in the video game The Last of Us. Her performance in the Naughty Dog title was spectacular, hence with the premiere of the HBO series she has returned to the limelight (on television, her role is played by Anna Torv, also masterfully).

But although Tess is now her best-known role, the actress has worked in more than a dozen television series. For example, she played FBI agent Renee Walker in the TV series 24. Likewise, in the fiction Runaways, which is part of the Marvel audiovisual universe, she was in charge of giving life to Leslie Dean.

A GoFundMe for the family

Ever Carradine, a friend of Annie Wersching, has opened a GoFundMe to help the actress’ family. At the age of 45, she leaves behind three children: Freddie (12 years old), Ozzie (9 years old) and Archie (4 years old). Likewise, and as can be read in the statement on the website, the family still needs to pay the remaining medical bills and funeral expenses of the actress, so part of the money will also be dedicated to this problem.

“Everybody loved Annie. Everyone. But beyond how much we loved her, she loved her boys more. Let’s take care of them for her”, reads the end of the text that appears on the web page.

At this moment, the donation process has collected more than $150,000 of the $250,000 that has been set as a goal.
