Slender spinoffs – which one is scariest?

Slender has been one of the viral success stories of 2012. Inevitably, there have been many spin-offs that have tried to recreate the horror and terror of Slender. But how scary are they? We locked some Softonic editors in a darkened room to play some of them and filmed their reactions to see which one was the scariest (game I mean, not editor!)

Nokia Maps for Windows Phone 8 – the best mobile map app?

Nokia Maps is one of the highlights of the new Windows Phone 8 operating system which was announced this week.

The maps application will be built into every Windows Phone 8 device and promises to make it easier to find your way around with a Windows Phone 8 phone than it is with an Android or iOS device.

With its detailed route planning and offline capabilities, there’s a strong argument to say that Nokia Maps is the most powerful built-in navigation application on any smartphone. However, Google Maps is a proven performer, and, despite recent bad publicity, the iOS Maps app has potential.

Grand Theft Auto V releasing Spring 2013

Rockstar Games is known for being very cryptic with information about its games. The company chooses carefully when to release any new details of its upcoming games. After Grand Theft Auto IV’s DLC, players were already curious about the next game in the franchise and Rockstar teased them with one trailer and some screens.

Today Rockstar released a teaser image with the general release date for Spring 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. While Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC or Mac release date, the game will probably eventually be released for non-console players sometime after the console launch.

How to: Install a plugin in Photoshop

In a previous post, I highlighted some really fun and useful plugins for Photoshop. Plugins are convenient ways to add more functionality to your Photoshop experience. You can add filter options, or even help optimize your image’s appearance in other ways.

Plugins are completely useless to you if you don’t know how to install them though. They often don’t even come with installers or instructions on how to set them up.

Google announces Android 4.2

Google is offering faster updates to the Android operating system by introducing Android 4.2. With this new update, Android expands the usability of the operating system in conjunction with the release of new Android devices.

The update doesn’t radically change anything featured in Android 4.1, but updates functions that users can take advantage of with supported devices. Google will be launching Android 4.2 as the default operating system in their new first-party Nexus branded devices that will be released mid-November. There currently isn’t a release date for Android 4.2 to be pushed devices like the Galaxy Nexus or the original Nexus 7.

Windows Phone 8 launch recap

Microsoft released Windows 8 to the public last week and it continues the momentum with the official launch of Windows Phone 8. While the new Windows Phone 8 devices aren’t readily available yet, Vice President Joe Belfiore announced more features in the new operating system that he didn’t touch on during the Windows Phone Summit back in June.

The Windows Phone Summit was a beginner’s introduction to the upgraded operating system, highlighting hardware and more developer specific information. Today’s launch announcement was directed more toward the consumer.

In-depth look at the new features of PowerPoint 2013

powerpoint2013iconWindows 8 is out and if you bought a Windows RT tablet, you’ll have early access to Office 2013. For the rest of us, Office 2013 will be released sometime early 2013 but is it worth the upgrade if you already have Office 2010?

Of course many users will want to stay with their current Microsoft Office version to avoid re-learning how to do things but Office 2013 may just have enough compelling new features to convince them to upgrade.
