GTA V out September 17 2013

Rockstar has just announced the release date for Grand Theft Auto V, and it’s later than expected. It was planned for Spring 2013, but like earlier GTA games has been delayed.

That’s disappointing for me as I am really looking forward to playing the game. However, I prefer Rockstar to release the game when it’s ready, rather than rushing out a poor product. Tight schedules can result in bad games, like last year’s Medal of Honor: Warfighter, which EA has decided to stop making as a result. With a game as ambitious and important as Grand Theft Auto V, it’s important they get it right.

As you can see from the comment on Rockstar’s announcement, lots of fans are pretty upset about the delay. This will all be forgotten when GTA V is released!

evasi0n jailbreak for iOS 6 coming February 3rd

jailbreak-iphoneThe evasi0n Jailbreak Team confirmed their tool for jailbreaking iOS 6 devices will arrive Sunday, February 3rd.

The team has been working tirelessly for months on this jailbreak, which will allow users to install customizations and tweaks that aren’t supported by Apple. Many devices will be covered by this jailbreak tool. Click the source link to see if your device is supported.

Currently, a tethered jailbreak exists for iOS 6 devices, which means that the jailbreak will be lost if you reboot your phone or if your battery dies. This is a less than ideal solution and the evasi0n jailbreak will fix that issue.

Be warned that jailbreaking your Apple device will void its warranty so proceed with caution. Jailbreaking is also legal and protected by an exemption in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in the United States.

Free to play MMO Wizardry Online available in US and EU

Sony’s fantasy multiplayer online role playing game Wizardry Online has launched for US and EU players.
It’s billed as the ‘the most hardcore fantasy MMORPG ever created’, and it’s certainly no World of Warcraft.

‘Perma-death’ is a feature of the game – so you are at risk of losing your character forever if you die. Another interesting feature is the Bounty Hunt System. Players can kill and rob each other, but will then be deemed Criminals, and can have a bounty put on their head.

Check out the launch trailer:

It’s free to play, so there’s no reason not to try it out. You choose to be human, elf, porkul, gnome or dwarf, and pick a class from fighter, mage, priest and thief. Then it’s off into the dark, danger filled dungeons.

The perma-death isn’t quite as final as it might be, as your character’s experience will be ‘noted on the soul’, meaning your next character won’t be starting from scratch.

Find out more on the Wizardry Online homepage.

Mozilla to block Firefox plugins by default to increase speed and security

firefox iconIn an effort to increase speed and security of Firefox, Mozilla will be updating their browser to run plugins on an on demand basis. This new feature is called Click to Play and should be rolling out to Firefox soon.

Previously, plugins were automatically loaded when a website requested it. Now Silverlight, Java, Adobe Reader and outdated Flash plugins will automatically be blocked until a user clicks to request it. Flash will still be loaded automatically as many sites require it for navigation.

Click to Play will be customizable so you can tell specific sites to load plugins automatically if you need a plugin to run all the time.

ctp-in-action1

In a blog post, Mozilla’s Michael Coates explained the reasoning behind Click to Play:

Poorly designed third party plugins are the number one cause of crashes in Firefox and can severely degrade a user’s experience on the Web. This is often seen in pauses while plugins are loaded and unloaded, high memory usage while browsing, and many unexpected crashes of Firefox. By only activating plugins that the user desires to load, we’re helping eliminate pauses, crashes and other consequences of unwanted plugins.

This is a nice addition and should make Firefox perform quicker. There is currently no release date for Click to Play.

Overhauled BlackBerry World provides portal for music, movies, apps, and more

The overhauled BlackBerry World is now live and aims to the portal for BlackBerry users to fill all of their entertainment needs. This is perfect timing for the launch of BlackBerry 10 today. BlackBerry World features music, movies, apps, and TV shows with pricing that’s similar to competitors like iTunes and Amazon.

Music albums can be purchased for $8-12. Individual tracks cost from $0.99-$1.29. TV shows can be had for $1.99 per episode. Movies are quite expensive and will run from $10-$20. Users will also have the ability to rent films for $4 each. Movies will hit the store on the same day of its DVD release.

While the new BlackBerry World is a nice addition for BlackBerry users, its offerings just aren’t as fleshed out as its competitors. It’s still early days so hopefully BlackBerry can lock down more content.

See PES 2014’s impressive new engine in action

Konami is shaking things up for Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, using a new game engine based on their ‘Fox’ engine. That engine is being used for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, so we can already see it in action.

Using an adapted version of this game engine will clearly make Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 an incredible looking game. EA’s FIFA series has been pretty much untouchable for a few seasons now, but nothing lasts forever. Could this be the year PES retakes the soccer crown?

Here’s the trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, using the Fox Engine. As you’ll see, we can at least predict the rain will look great in PES 2014!

PES team leader Jon Murphy is in Japan now, to see the new engine, so we expect some more updates from him soon. He has already teased on Twitter that the new engine ‘is going to spring some surprises!’

While this engine looks great, there’s more to soccer than graphics. However well Leo Messi’s face is rendered won’t matter if the gameplay’s not right. FIFA also maintains its licensing advantage.

Facebook for iOS updates with video recording and voice messages

facebook iconFacebook has updated its iOS application with a video recording feature within the application. Users will be greeted with a new option when choosing to add a photo. There is now a slider within the camera to switch to video mode. Perhaps this is the duplicate functionality that Facebook has claimed Twitter’s Vine was infringing on with its updated 3rd party application policy.

Another update within the Facebook app for iOS is the ability to record and share voice messages with people in your friends list. Previously, this ability was only available to Facebook Messenger users but it has now been ported over to the main Facebook app so users will not require two apps. Still, Facebook Messenger is a more streamlined messaging application that some users may prefer.
