3 dirty tricks that antivirus companies don’t want you to know about

It’s safe to say that we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing an antivirus to protect us from the abundance of harmful programs out there. Most of them are great at doing what they do, but as many users refuse to pay for the privilege, certain programs are looking for something else to get out of us – ironically putting us into more danger.

best-chrome-extensions-840x420

Here are three tricks that antivirus providers use to benefit from you:

1. Browser add-ons

It’s extremely common for an antivirus, when installed, to add extensions to your internet browser. They’ll promise you safer navigation, but the truth is they’re just doing it for their own benefit, and these extensions are more likely to expose you to an online attack. Ironic, isn’t it?

2

As you can see above, browser add-ons such as AVG promise you the perfect security when surfing the net, however in 2015, a researcher at Google revealed that this particular extension was adding a large number of APIs within the JavaScript, many of which were broken. This means that the browsing history is exposed, and leaves your browser open to security breaches. Although this particular case was shortly amended by the company, it just goes to show what the others on the market are capable of.

What to do:

Don’t agree to install the extensions during the antivirus setup. They have nothing to offer that your current browser doesn’t already offer in terms of security. If you have already downloaded some, simply go to the extensions page on your browser and remove them.

2. Beware of “free” antivirus programs

Sometimes, the cheapest can turn out to be the most expensive in the long run. As far as antiviruses are concerned, the majority of ones that are “free” will come with adware, spyware, toolbars and so on. Although the companies don’t do it with bad intention, it is an attempt for them to make a bit of extra money through advertising and tracking your internet activity. They’ve got to make money somehow, right?

But, exactly how are they benefiting?

They can change your default search engine: This way, the creators of the antivirus can benefit by click-advertising in their results page.

They can change your home page: Companies can pay a lot of money to appear as your homepage – most of you will have witnessed this already.

Junkware: Additional programs may be installing themselves if you don’t pay attention during the antivirus setup.

Tracking: Some antivirus programs will be tracking your internet activity and collecting your personal information which they can then sell to third parties.

If you don’t want to pay for antivirus software, we can recommend the following free versions:

Windows Defender: It comes bundled with Windows 10 and you can’t really go wrong by “keeping it in the family.”

BitDefender: Rings very few alarm bells during the installation process.

AvastAlthough it will prompt you to install some add-ons, you can choose not to.

AVG: This program has vastly improved since its early mistakes, just make sure to check all options before completing the setup process.

3. Don’t trust the ones that scare you

How many times have you received an email or a pop-up telling you that “your system is infected” or “Virus has been found”, etc?

It’s more common to be exposed to these when browsing small, lesser-know sites, who tend not to care where the money for advertising is coming from. Some of them may be legitimate, but the fact is, most of them are not. These programs will steal your information and sell it on to third parties.

So what can you do to prevent them?

Simply don’t click on them. It might sound like common sense, but these companies are still making money from people installing their software. If anything is telling you that your computer is in danger, or that they’ve managed to scan your system in record time without you clicking a thing, it’s more likely to be untrustworthy. It’s simple – just don’t bother risking it!

How to find and block advertisers and apps on Facebook

We all love Facebook – even more so that it’s free. But sometimes we find ourselves forgetting that all-important rule in life- that nothing is for free.

Like all great things in life, Facebook comes at a price, and in Zuckerberg’s billion-dollar world, privacy is the most popular form of currency.

You may already know that thousands of advertisers and apps are using our data every day, yet most of us are completely unaware as to what extent. Don’t panic yet, as all will be revealed.

Here are the easiest ways to find who they are, and stop them in their tracks!

How to track and block the advertisers that follow you:

1. Go to you Facebook Settings

2. Go to the settings.

2. Click on the Ads option on the left-hand-side of the screen

3. Click on the Ads button.

3. Click on the “Edit” buttons on each section

4. In each section of Ads, click on the "edit" buttons.

Once in this section, you can clearly see how some advertisers are using your Facebook ID in the ads that your contacts see on their feed. Many times when you “like” a page, you give the advertiser permission to do this.

This is easily changed by changing the option to “No one” (see below).

5. Inside the edit menu, it will show you how your Facebook ID is used in ads that other people see. In this hypothetical example, my friends are apparently seeing an ad for Jasper's Market that it appears I have endorsed (the ad is triggered by the fact that I liked the company in the past).

How to find and block the apps that follow you:

1. Go to Facebook Settings again

10. Once you're in the settings, go to Apps.

2. Select “App” from the left-hand side

10. Once you're in the settings, go to Apps.

You’ll now be presented with a list of all the apps that are currently tracking you on Facebook (similar to below).

11. This is the shocking bit, the list of company apps that are tracking you on Facebook. Apparently I have allowed 54 apps access to my Facebook account. Be sure to click on the "show all" button to get the full list.

Shocked? We thought so.

3. Place your pointer over one of the apps to reveal the Edit or Delete icons

13. Hover your mouse over one of the apps. You have options. You can edit the app's permissions or delete it completely so it can no longer access your Facebook account.

When you click Edit, you’ll be presented with a list which indicates exactly what the app is able to extract from your data. Scary, huh? Take your time to look at what apps are using what, and try to take back full control of your data!

If you’re curious as to what other information Facebook has on you, there’s a new feature which allows you to download all your Facebook data in just a few minutes. Click here to learn how!

5 awesome tricks that’ll change the way you use Snapchat

Snapchat is a happy medium between a messenger app and a social network, and if you’re already an avid user, you’ll know just how much fun it can actually be.

Although the interface is generally user-friendly, the app actually has quite a few hidden features that you probably didn’t know existed.

If you don’t have Snapchat yet, you can download it for free here: (iOS) | (Android)

1. Use two filters on a single snap

Did you know that Snapchat allows you to use two filters in one snap? To do this, simply add the first filter you wish to apply, without lifting your finger from the screen. Use another finger to browse the other filters and select the second one you want to apply. This trick is great if you wish to add a color filter to your snaps, as well as include a geotag (see below).

1-filters

2. Change the size of your emojis

You’ve probably realized already that you can add text to your snaps, as well as emojis! One of the best things about using emojis is that you can change the position and the size as you see fit. To achieve this, simply add the emoji you want to add and click the “T” in the top-right of the screen. This enables you to move the emoji around, as well as change the size using the usual two-finger “zoom” method.

Don’t like how it looks? No problem! Just click the “T” again to return it to its original size.

2-emojis

3. Find the perfect sticker

Snapchat boasts hundreds of stickers, but how do you find the perfect one for your message? If you’re looking for a certain type of sticker to convey something specific, you can write a keyword in the chat (for example, “family,” “love”, “hamburger”, etc.) and touching the sticker button after. You’ll notice that all of the stickers available to you are now related to the keyword.

3-stickers

4. Change the names of your friends

By default, Snapchat shows the names of your contacts exactly how they appear in your contacts, but there is the possibility to change them if you so wish. You can edit them at any time by tapping on the contact (in the app) and placing your finger over the name that appears below their profile photo. This is particularly useful if you want to ad an “A” in front of someone you message frequently, so you don’t have to scroll down too far to select them from your list of contacts.

4-names

5. Activate this option to save your data

Like most apps that involve photos and video, Snapchat can consume a lot of your mobile data. There is however, a way you can minimize this problem.

Within your profile options, tap Manage > Additional services, and activate the “Travel mode“. With this option activated, your snaps and stories will only download when you choose to download them, and not automatically.

5-travelmode

So, did you know about these tricks for Snapchat? What other tricks can you recommend?
