Mission Impossible is a franchise that has become one of the most important action sagas of the 21st century. Hand in hand with John Wick, they are the two best of the genre that continue to work the most in theaters today, and their next installment is coming: Mission Impossible: Deadly Judgment.
Throughout the past Mission Impossible films, we have seen Tom Cruise, in the role of Ethan Hunt, taking on various threats. However, his new villain is much more ethereal: an Artificial Intelligence. Something that, despite how it may seem, makes perfect sense.
A threat that relates to reality
In an interview with Screen Rant, actor Simon Pegg, who will also appear in the film—which, by the way, will be divided into two parts—explained the significance of this new enemy of Hunt and how it relates to our everyday earthly lives:
“When we started making the movie, McQuarrie talked to me about the idea of the villain, and I thought, ‘This is perfect. This is so Mission Impossible.’ Mission Impossible has always revolved around technology, masks, and devices, and this is something we all quickly understood. But as we were shooting the film, it suddenly became more prophetic, like a reflection of what is happening in society today, to the point that it could be something that is happening right now, and we just don’t know it yet.”
Undoubtedly, AI is becoming more prevalent in our daily lives. And although it currently manifests in the form of tools like ChatGPT or Midjourney, which are not a significant threat to society, this may change soon.
