Cults are something that, whether we like it or not, we are madly attracted to. And I don’t mean (only) to join one, worship a false God and die in a collective suicide. I am referring, rather, to how much we like the morbidity around them, and how interesting we find their workings.
Thanks to our undaunted attraction to cults, the main platforms have been taking advantage for years to make documentaries that we swallow as an audience without being able to help it. Some of the most striking have been Wild Wild Country, The Family or Pray Away. But now Netflix has just released what can be considered the definitive documentary on cults: How to become a cult leader.
Narrated by Peter Dinklage, it is a perfect documentary to enter into this world.
Recently released on the platform, this docuseries analyzes in a sardonic way and with amusing irony the main cult leaders we know and how they came to power. In addition, it is narrated by none other than Peter Dinklage, Tyrion in Game of Thrones, who gives a very entertaining tone to the documentary.
The leaders featured in the series are six: Manson, Jim Jones, David Koresh, Marshall Applewhite, Warren Jeffs and Sun Myung Moon. Each episode focuses on a different one, explaining their story in detail but getting to the point rather than going into the nitty-gritty details.

The most curious thing about the documentary is how the narrator relates all of them to each other, making it clear that in the end they all use similar methods to carry out their plans. It is, undoubtedly, a broad and diverse perspective on these phenomena that have done so much damage throughout history. It is perfect for getting into this little world and an ideal first step to, little by little, delve deeper into the sects.
