Few indie games have achieved the success of Shovel Knight. Becoming a franchise in itself, it has turned its studio, Yacht Club Games, into an institution. With a cult following, it has made everyone pay attention to each of its games. And it’s not for nothing. With beautiful art, incredible gameplay, and years of updates, its community has never gone hungry. And it won’t, it seems.
Last Friday, June 14th, in the studio they did a Yacht Club Games’ Friday livestream to celebrate the game’s tenth anniversary. There they announced Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope DX, the definitive version of the original Shovel Knight, a free DLC for Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, showed more of Mina the Hollower, and announced that Shovel Knight Dig would be coming out very soon. But none of these were the most important announcements of the night.
It wasn’t until the end of the streaming that they dropped the bomb. Shovel Knight will have a new installment. They stated that it will have a new dimension, but they didn’t give a specific date or specify what they meant. They simply showed a 3D rotating version of the company’s logo.
What they did specify is that the game will continue to be Shovel Knight in all the important aspects. In their own words, “the game will bring electrifying action, richer mechanics, and all the timeless charm you can expect from a Shovel Knight title.” So there doesn’t seem to be anything to fear about it.
Especially because the 3D logo made us think that it is something that fans of the game have been speculating about for years: Shovel Knight 3D. Specifically, Shovel Knight 64. A game in the style of 3D games, more specifically games like the Nintendo 64 platformers, but with the aesthetics and difficulty of Shovel Knight. A truly complex leap that, if anyone can do it, it is undoubtedly Yacht Club Games. They have had ten years to do it, so if that’s what it is, they may be able to surprise us with something even more special than we expect.
