Few franchises have had more cultural impact in Japan than Mobile Suit Gundam. Few franchises have had less impact in the West than Mobile Suit Gundam. To be fair, it’s a country-specific thing, with France and Italy being two countries where they seem to appreciate the value of giant robots, but they are the exception to the rule. It’s something that remains curious when they are very popular throughout Asia and, in general, in any place where they have embraced their concept.
As announced earlier, Netflix is making its own version of the series. Named Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance, it is a CGI series with a more Western style that they plan to release on October 17th. Having recently released a new trailer for the series, they have also dropped an even more surprising news. This adaptation will have its own video game. And it will be within Fortnite.
Developed by Look North World, developers behind ARK: Survival Evolved and numerous games developed within Fortnite, this Gundam-based gameplay mode will be a team deathmatch. Accessible for free to all players with a Fortnite account, it will be a way to promote the series, as well as a way to demonstrate the flexibility of the Unreal Editor for Fortnite.
Surprisingly, this is not the only collaboration that Mobile Suit Gundam has had with a shooter this year. At the beginning of 2024, skins based on several of its mechas were introduced in Call of Duty, specifically the RX-78 Gundam, Char Asnable’s red Zaku-II, and Gundam Aerial from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury. On the other hand, this should not surprise us so much. Not when the 45th anniversary of the original Mobile Suit Gundam premiere will be celebrated in 2024.
These collaborations are intended to get people interested in Gundam, and if they are loyal to their subject matter, they are always interesting. Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance will be released on October 17th on Netflix. The game mode based on the movie will be released in Fortnite shortly, and will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices.
