Rockstar has locked in a release date for Grand Theft Auto VI: November 19, 2026. It’s also confirmed a detail that could trip up a lot of buyers. Retail download codes for the PlayStation 5 version will only work with a PlayStation Network account from the same region where the game was purchased.
That becomes a real issue if the boxed PS5 edition of GTA 6 ends up being what many expect, a box with a download code instead of a standard disc. PS5 discs have been mostly region-free since the PlayStation 3 days. Sony’s digital games and DLC have worked differently for years. They’re tied to your PSN region, so if you import a copy from another country, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to redeem it at all.
Xbox Series X|S seems to be much easier on this point. Reports say retail GTA 6 codes on Xbox can be redeemed worldwide, which gives people a cleaner option if they buy games internationally, want a special edition, or are simply shopping wherever the price is lowest.
For some players, this won’t be a minor technical detail. If you import games, or if you live in a country where PSN still isn’t officially supported, check this before spending any money. PSN is officially available in only 73 countries, Sony doesn’t make account-region changes easy, and some players may end up having to rely on secondary accounts.
There’s another wrinkle in Japan. Reports say PS5 GTA 6 codes there will expire 170 days after the November 19, 2026 launch. So on PS5, you’ll need a PSN account that matches the code’s region. On Xbox Series X|S, retail codes can reportedly be redeemed globally.
