The launch of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered in April 2025 generated high levels of expectation, but a year later, the criticism focuses on the significant technical issues that have persisted since its debut.
Developed by Virtuos and Bethesda, the game has been the subject of extensive analysis, such as that by Digital Foundry, which pointed out at its launch that it had serious performance problems. Despite selling millions of copies, many in the gaming community feel that the title is practically abandoned.
A game that should be fixed
Since its launch, players have reported stuttering in the game, instability in the frames per second (fps), and, more concerning, memory leak issues that have not been resolved.
The latest patch, released in July 2025, contributed very little in this regard, and since then no significant updates have been announced. Digital Foundry describes the current state of the game as “somewhere between annoying and unplayable,” depending on the player’s tolerance for these deep technical issues.
The combination of the original 2006 architecture of the game with the modern Unreal Engine 5 has been identified as one of the main causes of performance instability. This design decision has complicated the user experience and raised serious doubts about Bethesda’s commitment to optimizing the title after its release.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Oblivion Remastered expected in 2026, many players hope this will be an opportunity for Bethesda to implement improvements across all platforms.
However, the lack of updates throughout this year has increased frustration in the community, which demands more attention and post-launch support. It remains to be seen whether Bethesda will address these demands with the upcoming release and whether it will manage to rescue what could be one of its most beloved franchises.
