BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant, is setting ambitious targets for its international sales, aiming to double its overseas vehicle sales and reach over 800,000 units by 2025.
CEO Wang Chuanfu has highlighted the promising potential of markets in Latin America and Southeast Asia, where local consumers are increasingly receptive to Chinese automotive brands.
Following a record year in 2024 with revenues soaring to 777.1 billion yuan (approximately $107 billion) and a 41% increase in new energy vehicle sales, BYD’s momentum doesn’t appear to be slowing.
Toyota maintaining its position as the world’s largest automaker with 10.8 million vehicles sold in 2024
Despite Toyota maintaining its position as the world’s largest automaker with 10.8 million vehicles sold in 2024, BYD aims to match Toyota’s scale, which Wang believes will lead to greater profit margins per vehicle.
The company has transitioned away from producing internal combustion engine vehicles, focusing solely on plug-in hybrid and electric models since 2022. This strategic shift has paid off, resulting in sales of over 4.27 million new energy vehicles last year.
To control costs and increase profitability, BYD plans to localize vehicle assembly in foreign markets while sourcing key components from China. This approach is projected to enhance their competitive edge, especially as the automotive industry continues to trend towards electric mobility.
Wang noted that a significant portion of BYD’s profits could be derived from these overseas operations in the future.
In addition to its budget-friendly offerings like the Seagull EV, which starts under $10,000, BYD is actively expanding its portfolio with luxury cars and sophisticated EV technology.
The company’s rapid advancements in battery technology and smart driving systems are set to propel its growth in the coming years. As other industry players, including Toyota, face challenges—such as delays in EV battery production—BYD appears well positioned to capitalize on the evolving automotive landscape and assert its dominance on a global scale.
