OpenAI is putting a limit back on ChatGPT Plus. On August 25, 2026, ChatGPT Work and Codex will once again have a five-hour cap. OpenAI had lifted that cap on July 12 and left it off for about six weeks, but Plus users will now need to keep an eye on two limits again: a rolling five-hour cap and a broader weekly allowance. Regular ChatGPT chats aren’t affected.
OpenAI engineering lead Thibault Sottiaux said the change should make demand easier to predict and keep newer or more casual users from burning through too much of their weekly quota in a single long session. If you use ChatGPT Work or Codex a lot on ChatGPT Plus, pay attention. If you hit the five-hour cap, you’ll have to wait for that window to reset. And if you use up your weekly quota, you’re locked out unless you buy extra credits.
OpenAI also says the restored cap won’t apply to the $100 and $200 Pro plans for at least the next few months. Enterprise and Edu plans are exempt too, since they run on a separate credit-based system. The change goes live for ChatGPT Plus on August 25, 2026.
