Companies in 2026 aren’t dumping cybersecurity talent. They’re keeping people, then moving them into work that leaches less on manual review and more on automation, with roles that cut across teams. That’s the picture in the 2026 SANS/GIAC Cybersecurity Workforce Research Report, and you can see the same thing in the changes at LastPass.
LastPass gives a pretty clear example. In late 2025, the company eliminated its vulnerability management team and shifted that work into IT and product security, as automation and business intelligence tools took over triage and analysis. The broader numbers point the same way: the 2026 SANS/GIAC Cybersecurity Workforce Research Report says 74% of organizations already see AI changing team size and role structure.
The pressure shows up first at the entry level. Tier 1 SOC work, especially log review and alert triage, is where automation is bearing down hardest, and 56% of professionals in a May 2026 survey said it had reduced demand for entry-level staff. Even so, this doesn’t look like a hiring collapse. The World Economic Forum put the global gap at about 4.8 million jobs in 2024, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics still projects 29% growth for information security analysts from 2024 to 2034. It looks more like the work is being rearranged than erased.
If you work in security, this is the part to pay attention to. The World Economic Forum’s 2026 Global Cybersecurity Outlook says 87% of organizations now see AI-related vulnerabilities as their fastest-growing risk. Employers want people who can handle cloud security, data analysis, model security, cross-team risk evaluation, judgment, communication, and business context.
The same change is showing up in leadership and compliance. Companies are pulling infrastructure, cybersecurity, and machine learning under one senior technology leader, while LastPass is reorganizing compliance so automation frees staff to work as business information security officers aligned with business units. Newer roles are gaining ground too, including Security Data Analyst, Automation and Detection Engineer, and Artificial Intelligence Security Specialist, according to the SANS/GIAC Cybersecurity Workforce Research Report and the World Economic Forum’s 2026 Global Cybersecurity Outlook.
