Dragon Ball Super has, by this point, shifted its newest saga over to Gohan. Goku’s eldest son isn’t hanging around the edges anymore; he’s at the center of the action.
You can see it best in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Goku and Vegeta are pushed to the side, Gohan and Piccolo are the ones dealing with Earth’s biggest threat, and Gohan’s Beast transformation is presented as a real long-term jump in power, not another Cell Saga fake-out. This doesn’t read like Gohan is just covering for Goku while he trains somewhere else. The current Dragon Ball Super arc is built around what Gohan’s rise means, how important the Gohan-Piccolo partnership has become, and the fact that Gohan now looks like Earth’s first line of defense.
If you’ve been waiting for Dragon Ball Super to actually commit to Gohan as Goku’s successor, this is the shift to keep an eye on. Goku hasn’t been removed from the story, he’s still the franchise’s global face, and he could easily move back to the front in a future arc.
Still, that handoff comes through in the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero film, in the manga adaptation, and in the ongoing Dragon Ball Super story. Right now, the series is making its strongest case yet that the torch really is being passed, even with Goku still around as part of the story instead of carrying it by himself.
