Google Maps may soon become significantly more helpful with a new update that aims to show critical travel information upfront, allowing users to plan their journeys more efficiently. Until now, Maps only displayed traffic, distance, and travel time. But that’s about to change.

Google is currently testing a feature that will show parking availability, fuel-efficient routes, and exact arrival timesdirectly in the first overview window after users enter a destination. This means users won’t need to swipe through panels or menus to find this data. Instead, a “P” icon for parking, a green leaf for eco-friendly routes, and precise ETAs will appear immediately, making trip planning faster and more intuitive.
Fuel efficiency and parking get easier
Right now, users need to open the bottom panel to see fuel-saving routes or check parking options. But with the new feature, these options will be integrated right into the default route view, encouraging smarter decisions from the start. Fuel-efficient paths will still be marked with the familiar green leaf, giving users a clear comparison with the fastest route.
This upgrade is in limited testing among high-tier Local Guides, hinting that a broader rollout could be tied to upcoming updates. While there’s no confirmed release date, the feature appears poised to make Google Maps a more comprehensive trip assistant, especially as the platform moves to prioritize in-app features over the web version.
