Instagram is working on an iPad version. This time, it’s real

After years of waiting and countless user requests, Instagram is finally developing a dedicated iPad app, according to a new report from The Information. Despite being one of the most-used social platforms in the world, Instagram has never offered a native experience for iPad—until now.

A long-overdue feature finally in progress

Instagram’s iPad app has long been one of the platform’s most requested features. Currently, iPad users are forced to run the iPhone version, resulting in a zoomed-in, awkward interface that fails to take advantage of the larger screen. Now, for the first time in over 15 years, Meta seems ready to change that.

The report suggests that Meta is looking to boost Instagram usage as it navigates a competitive social media landscape, especially with TikTok’s future in the U.S. still uncertain. The addition of an iPad app could help bring more engagement, especially from users who rely on tablets for content creation and media consumption.

Instagram changes course after years of excuses

In past years, Instagram leadership often downplayed the need for an iPad version. In 2021, Instagram head Adam Mosseri admitted that it “would be nice,” but not a priority. The justification was always the same: not enough users, not enough resources. Yet the demand never faded, and now it seems the company is finally responding.

There’s no official launch date yet, and no guarantee the app won’t be delayed or even canceled. But for the first time, there’s real momentum behind a feature that many users have waited far too long for.
