The movie theaters in the United States have experienced the worst weekend of the year in terms of box office revenue, reaching only 49 million dollars, the lowest figure since 1997.
This discouraging result is due to a combination of factors, among which the celebration of Halloween and the decisive game of the World Series of baseball stand out, but what has impacted the most has been the scarcity of major releases.
During the weekend, the highest-grossing film was the re-release of ‘Back to the Future’, which accumulated 4.7 million dollars in 2,290 theaters. Next, in ninth place, ‘Frankie and the Monsters’ barely managed to earn 2.1 million dollars since its release on Wednesday.
A Nightmare Weekend
This lack of significant new titles has led to alarming numbers, with October being a disastrous month for the box office, which has only managed to gather a total of 425 million dollars.
The situation has been exacerbated by the delays of anticipated releases, such as ‘Mortal Kombat 2’, which was originally scheduled for October 24 and has now been postponed until May 2026.
Meanwhile, ‘Despite You’ and ‘Black Phone 2’, the two highlighted releases from October 24, are in a tight competition, with estimates indicating that the former has grossed 8.1 million dollars, while the horror sequel has achieved 8 million.
Hoping to improve the situation, it is expected that ‘Predator: Badlands’ and other major releases like ‘Wicked 2’ and ‘Zootopia 2’, scheduled for the end of November, will drive new box office numbers.
However, the film market remains at a critical point, and it will be interesting to see if these releases manage to revitalize the public’s interest in movie theaters.
