Recently, there has been confusion among indie developers regarding the alleged existence of a minimum order requirement for the manufacturing of physical Xbox games.
This misunderstanding arises from the comments made by the developers of the indie game ‘Seed of Nostalgia’, who stated that they could not offer a physical version for Xbox due to a supposedly high minimum order requirement imposed by Microsoft.
However, after an investigation conducted by Danno Jackson from Gamer Social Club, it became clear that Microsoft has no minimum order requirement for developers wishing to release physical copies of their games.
Xbox confirms that there is no minimum order for the production of physical games
In a statement, a spokesperson for Xbox confirmed that “there is no minimum order quantity for physical media.” They added that decisions regarding the production of physical versions depend on retailers, studios, and partners, and not on a requirement imposed by the company.
The news may have surprised many, as the developers of ‘Seed of Nostalgia’ had felt frustrated by this seemingly arbitrary limitation. Jackson mentioned that the information the developers had might be outdated and that in 2023, Xbox had reduced its requirements, although the precise details of that reduction remain unclear.
Despite there being no minimum order, developers still face limitations in terms of resources and production chains when trying to manufacture physical copies. This suggests that, although Xbox’s policy is accessible, the process can be complicated due to other external factors affecting the production of physical games.
In the gaming community, there is still uncertainty about how these policies impact indie developers. Meanwhile, those interested in the ‘Seed of Nostalgia’ project can visit its Kickstarter campaign, which promises to capture the essence of classic JRPGs.
