Cloud gaming is continuously advancing, and it’s one of the markets that companies are eager to explore in the medium and long term. Investments in this niche are growing steadily. That’s why Microsoft is considering offering basic PC support in its Xbox Cloud Gaming system, which would allow playing all kinds of computer games.
This change would be significant because currently, Xbox Cloud Gaming exclusively works with base Xbox Series X systems, allowing you to play many games that are also available on PC, but not the exclusive PC games. This way, game streaming would open up even more to a very interesting catalog of games.
Secret revealed by the FTC’s investigation
The documents from the lawsuit between Microsoft and the FTC over the purchase of Activision are bringing to light a wealth of valuable information. One of them, undoubtedly, would be this advancement in Xbox Cloud Gaming that has been in consideration since 2021 when Google Stadia was still a competitor in this format. However, now, even though other brands like GeForce Now are also claiming their share of the pie, Microsoft has much more freedom in this market.
PC games, in this way, could be played through this system, which is already compatible with computers, tablets, smartphones, and even television software. This would represent a substantial improvement for all those users who, without high-end hardware but with a good internet connection, can enjoy high-performance games without worrying about anything else.
Stadia, ahead of its time
Considering the growing cloud gaming market, it’s noteworthy that Stadia, which launched in 2019, closed its doors at the beginning of 2023. Now, Google is focused on other projects more geared towards gaming on mobile devices, but in an environment where they have already tested what doesn’t work, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for them to venture into game streaming again under a new project. However, at the moment, Google has not shown any signs of doing so.
With an exciting future for cloud gaming, and awaiting whether Microsoft will eventually add PC support to Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming, it remains to be seen the short and medium-term moves of various competitors in this market, where, for example, Sony has also shown significant interest but less development to date.
