The successful novel Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, which has resonated in multiple formats, such as a movie and audiobook, will now expand even further with a new manga adaptation. This project, which will be published by Hayakawa Publishing, will feature illustrations by Hajime Go and text adaptation by Kazuko Onoda, who previously translated the novel into Japanese.
Few Western novels are adapted into manga
The publication of the manga has been announced through social media, where one of the images was shown, depicting Ryland Grace in the tunnel between the Hail Mary ship and the Blip-A just before his encounter with Rocky. This new format could offer readers scenes that were not included in the movie, thus expanding the narrative of the story, which has captured the attention of fans of cinema and scientific literature.
The manga is expected to explore deeper aspects of the plot, such as the extreme efforts on Earth to combat global warming, which include drastic measures like the use of nuclear weapons in Antarctica. Additionally, more information could be provided about Rocky, Grace’s fascinating extraterrestrial companion, and the protagonist’s life on Earth before his stellar journey.
The movie, despite its success, had to make significant cuts to fit a more concise format, which left out various space feats. On the other hand, the new manga will not be limited by this same timeframe, which could allow for a more complete development of the deleted scenes, including the maneuvers in the ‘Beetles’, essential ships for the mission that were briefly mentioned in the film adaptation.
With the promise of a visually appealing and narratively rich format, the Project Hail Mary manga could not only satisfy fans of the novel, but also attract new audiences who have yet to explore the universe of Ryland Grace and Rocky.
