A new Star Trek report lays out something easy to miss now: Spock, one of the franchise’s signature characters, came out of 1960s TV economics just as much as creative vision.
Roddenberry wanted the USS Enterprise to feel like a real picture of interplanetary cooperation. But Star Trek Season 1 was running at about $190,000 an episode, the report says, and that money was already going into sets, costumes, props, and effects. Spock solved a problem. Pointed ears, lifted brows, and that unshakable calm made him look unmistakably alien without requiring costly new prosthetics every week.
The original idea had Spock as half-Martian. That changed when Star Trek made him Vulcan, partly so the character wouldn’t be overtaken by new NASA discoveries, according to the report. It also gave the writers space to build out his culture, philosophy, and identity, and in time one of the deepest species in the franchise.
If you keep up with Star Trek, this report is well worth a look. It points out that Leonard Nimoy took that practical design and turned it into something much bigger, shaping Spock through an outsider’s point of view and bringing in the Vulcan salute from a Jewish priestly blessing, along with “Live long and prosper.”
That legacy is still on screen now in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, where Ethan Peck plays a younger Spock.
