Sam Raimi, a director famous for his work in the superhero genre, has confirmed that he is working on a new Darkman movie, an original character that hit the big screen 36 years ago thanks to Liam Neeson’s portrayal. During a recent promotion for his new horror film, Send Help, Raimi revealed that there is already a script and that he has recruited two directors, Brian Netto and Adam Schindler, to lead the project. However, the director emphasized that the film is facing funding difficulties, a common obstacle in the film industry.
Returns with an unexpected sequel
The original Darkman movie was a modest success upon its release, grossing 48 million dollars on a budget of just 14 million, which demonstrated the character’s potential. Despite its positive performance, the direct-to-video sequels that were produced later did not feature either Raimi’s direction or Neeson’s participation, who distanced themselves from the franchise since then. Since 1995, the year the last sequel was released, interest in Darkman has remained latent among superhero movie fans.
Regarding the possible return of Liam Neeson to the iconic role, the actor has previously expressed his interest in reading the script of the new movie before making a definitive decision about it. This is the first time Raimi mentions the possible resurgence of Darkman since 2022, when Universal Pictures showed interest in developing the project. However, the future of the sequel remains uncertain, as financial obstacles could delay its progress.
