Naughty Dog celebrates its 40th anniversary as a prominent video game development studio, a journey that began with humble beginnings in school by its founders, Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin. The studio, which is now one of Sony’s most important developers, has come a long way since its early titles, such as Rings of Power and Way of the Warrior, which have been forgotten, instead highlighting iconic franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter.
A company with a lot of history
In a commemorative video that recalls their greatest successes and also looks to the future, Gavin and Rubin discuss the turning points that led Naughty Dog to become synonymous with narrative and cinematic action. This shift began in 2007 with the release of Uncharted, a title that defined a new era for the studio and continued with critical and commercial successes like The Last of Us Part 2.
Alison Mori, studio manager, along with Jason Rubin, shared their vision that Naughty Dog will continue to create narrative video games that address deep human experiences. Mori, in particular, expressed her confidence that the company will maintain its commitment to excellence in creating character-driven games. In this regard, Neil Druckmann, known for his work on The Last of Us, has focused on the development of his next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which promises to offer “the deepest gameplay we have done to date.” However, the development still does not have a defined release date, which has generated some speculation among the studio’s followers.
With a legacy that spans several generations of video games, Naughty Dog remains a benchmark in the industry for its ability to tell complex and meaningful stories, with gameplay that challenges expectations. In its four decades of history, innovation and a focus on quality have been fundamental pillars that the company intends to continue exploring.
