Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI, alleging that the company took advantage of his humanitarian concerns regarding the dangers of artificial intelligence. At the start of the trial, Musk positions himself as the defender of an altruistic cause, arguing that OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit entity betrayed the original goals of its foundation.
The jury does not like Musk
During the jury selection process, several members expressed negative opinions about Musk, which adds a complication to his legal team’s strategy. Judge Yvonne Gonzales Rogers, in charge of the case, admitted that she is not a fan of Musk, but emphasized that this perception would not interfere with the fairness of the proceedings. In fact, some jurors described him bluntly, with one referring to him as “a piece of greedy, racist, and homophobic trash.”
The defense of OpenAI argues that the lawsuit arises because Musk was not getting the support he wanted in the company and that, in 2017, he himself proposed turning OpenAI into a for-profit business, an attempt that was rejected by the founders. According to OpenAI’s lawyer, William Savitt, Musk is only in this dispute because “he did not get what he wanted,” suggesting that his lawsuit is a consequence of an internal power struggle.
Musk will testify in the trial, which is expected to last several months before reaching a significant resolution. The conclusion of the case could be problematic for society as a whole, as the trigger for the controversy is a highly relevant topic: the future of artificial intelligence and its ethical implications.
