Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined has achieved a remarkable peak of 27,390 concurrent players on Steam, setting a record for this installment. However, this number still falls short of the impressive 45,357 players that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D reached at its launch in November 2024. Despite being well received, many critics believe that Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined does not match its predecessors nor offers as satisfying an experience as other entries in the series.
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remains the most celebrated game
According to comments in the ResetEra community, both titles have surpassed the concurrency figures of other Dragon Quest games, positioning themselves among the best entries in the franchise. However, some players and critics believe that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D deserves its place at the top, thanks to its excellent remake that respects the essence of the original and serves as a great gateway to the series. On the other hand, many also defend the importance of Dragon Quest 11, which is recognized for its rich narrative, considered one of the best in the history of the saga.
The creator of the series, Yuji Horii, has stated that one of the key differences between the protagonists of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy lies in the player’s closeness to these characters. While in Final Fantasy the protagonists often have elaborate dialogues, in Dragon Quest the aim is for the player to feel more involved in the hero’s journey.
Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined offers more accessible gameplay than the original, although this has led some critics, such as Dustin Bailey from Game Revolution, to argue that the game lacks some of the identity that makes Dragon Quest such a unique and rewarding series. Still, interest and engagement continue to grow, indicating that fans are willing to explore these new versions of a classic.
