Gary Oldman is a British actor with an enviable film career, recognized for his ability to transform and for portraying iconic characters such as Dracula, Commissioner James Gordon, Sirius Black, and Winston Churchill. His role as Churchill in Darkest Hour earned him the Oscar in 2018, after having been nominated twice before, the first time in 2011 for his performance in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
A tremendously demanding role
In Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, under the direction of Tomas Alfredson, Oldman embodies George Smiley in an adaptation of John Le Carré’s espionage novel. This role required intense preparation that left the actor exhausted, seriously affecting his health. Oldman revealed in the podcast Happy Sad Confused that he suffered a panic attack during the preparations, an experience he had never encountered before that led him to consider abandoning the project. “It was terrifying,” commented Oldman, who experienced difficulties eating and sleeping due to the pressure.
A factor that heightened his anxiety was Alec Guinness’s famous portrayal of Smiley in the 1979 and 1982 miniseries, which left him insecure about his own performance. “The ghost of Guinness got into my head and I thought: ‘They are really going to find me out and I am going to fail spectacularly,'” Oldman admitted, referring to his struggle with impostor syndrome.
Despite these challenges, once on set, Oldman managed to find balance and focus his energy on his performance, reflecting on the intensity of his preparation. To date, the actor has accumulated three Oscar nominations, including his recent one for the role of Herman J. Mankiewicz in Mank, directed by David Fincher. Oldman’s brilliant career continues to impress critics and audiences, solidifying him as one of the most respected figures of his generation.
