Pokemon, one of the most iconic franchises in the history of video games, celebrates its 30th anniversary amidst an impressive legacy that includes nine generations of games and over 1,025 collectible creatures. Despite its success, producer Tsunekazu Ishihara revealed that the development process of the first games, Pokémon Red and Green, was not easy. The original idea, which started as a simple concept of capturing and trading creatures, took six years to materialize due to resource limitations and numerous trials and errors.
Games Harder to Create Than They Seem
During a video message at the New York Game Awards, where the series was awarded the Andrew Yoon Legend Award, Ishihara explained the emotional connection that the developers had with the gameplay mechanics. Elements like catching insects and raising animals, common childhood experiences, were fundamental in shaping the gameplay that now defines the series. “With a strong desire to let many people experience those fundamental experiences through Pokémon, we were finally able to bring it to fruition,” Ishihara stated.
Today, with three decades of history, the belief that “Pokémon has the power to connect the world” remains a crucial driving force for the development of new titles within the franchise. Ishihara emphasized that this philosophy drives them to continue exploring ways to make the games more enjoyable and accessible to all audiences. With its rich history and constant evolution, Pokémon continues to captivate fans of all ages and promises to remain a powerful force in the world of video games.
