The series Welcome to Derry is set as a prequel to It, exploring the dark origins of Pennywise 27 years before the events of It: Chapter One. Although its original premise may seem redundant to some, this new approach aims to expand the narrative with time twists that promise to take the story beyond what is expected.
They have up to three seasons in mind
The creators, Andy and Barbara Muschietti, have the ambition to develop the story over three seasons, each focused on catastrophic events mentioned in the original book by Stephen King. The first season focuses on the Black Spot fire in 1962, while it is hinted that later seasons could go even further back, exploring Pennywise’s reign of terror in 1935 and 1908.
A crucial aspect of the narrative is the introduction of key characters, such as Marge Truman, whose fate is intrinsically linked to the future Losers. As the story progresses, Marge becomes a central figure, similar to Sarah Connor in Terminator, highlighting the interconnection between the past, present, and future in the fight against Pennywise. The series suggests that the bloodthirsty clown is aware of his fate and seeks to avoid his own destruction by trying to eliminate the future generations destined to defeat him.
The Muschiettis have emphasized the high quality standard of the production, ensuring that Welcome to Derry will not spare any resources. With an ambitious narrative approach and the promise of delving into the past, the inaugural season has left viewers wanting more, fueling expectations about what could come in future installments. Although a new cycle has not been officially confirmed, the planning is clear and expectations are high.
