During the 1990s, iconic titles such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Duke Nukem 3D established the foundations of the FPS genre, offering exciting gameplay and an innovative first-person perspective. Although these games did not use true 3D, their 2D sprites provided a three-dimensional illusion that captured the attention of numerous players, paving the way for new virtual combat experiences.
The retro meets the modern
The modder known as Daniel Peterson, more popularly known as Cheello, has been working on revitalizing these classics with a contemporary approach. In 2022, he released Voxel Doom, a mod that modernizes the classic from 1993 by introducing voxel graphics, a technique that uses three-dimensional pixels to create models that resemble traditional pixel art more than the polygonal models common today.
Currently, Cheello is in the final stages of development of Voxel Duke Nukem, which incorporates nearly a thousand voxels, aiming to preserve the original artistic style of the game while enhancing the gameplay experience. In its first trailer, this new approach allows characters and objects to better integrate into the environment, offering a smoother and more exciting gameplay.
Surprisingly, Cheello has also announced plans to release an RTX version of the original Doom game, using more advanced lighting and shadow techniques to provide a gaming experience that resembles the original intent of its creators. Although there is currently no specific release date, the anticipation among fans suggests that this could be just the beginning of a series of remasterings aimed at reviving the classics of the genre.
