Richard Gere, a recognized Hollywood actor, has had a career filled with successful titles, although his golden years seem to be behind him. Despite his status, the actor has felt frustrated for not being able to work with one of the directors he admires most: Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. Gere has expressed on several occasions his desire to collaborate on a film project with Kapur, known for outstanding works such as The Bandit Queen and Elizabeth, the latter acclaimed with seven Oscar nominations.
Decades chasing him that have not gone far
Gere’s interest in working together with Kapur dates back to the nineties, when he was so impressed by The Bandit Queen that, as he recalled in an interview with The Daily Eye, he even knelt down and begged the director to make a film with him. However, this desire never materialized and Gere claims that Kapur has ignored him, which has increased his frustration.
In 2005, there was a real opportunity for both to collaborate, as Kapur considered Gere for a project related to the life of Buddha. The actor even participated in the initial development phase; however, the project ultimately did not materialize, leaving Gere devastated for not being able to realize this long-awaited collaboration. Since then, their paths have not crossed, and Gere continues to struggle with the disappointment of not having been able to work alongside one of his favorite directors.
According to rumors, Gere’s distancing from the Hollywood industry may be linked to his stance on China, as he has previously stated that Hollywood no longer communicates with him due to this situation. Still, the actor remains a revered figure, hoping that one day his wish to join forces with Kapur will come true.
