Hiromu Arakawa, known for her acclaimed work Fullmetal Alchemist, returns to the anime scene with her new series Yomi no Tsugai, which is published in Spain under the title Spirits of the Underworld. The plot centers on two twins, Yuru and Asa, who were separated at birth and must reunite to combine their powers and save the world from possible destruction.
A new series from its creator
The premiere date of the anime has been confirmed for April 4th and will be available on Crunchyroll, which promises to be a major draw for Arakawa fans and anime lovers in general. With the arrival of a new trailer, viewers have been able to appreciate not only the visual animation but also the soundtrack, which includes the opening theme titled Tobu Toki by Vaundy and the closing theme Tobouyo by Yama.
Unlike Fullmetal Alchemist, which was based on a dieselpunk aesthetic influenced by European folklore, Yomi no Tsugai delves into the rich Japanese folklore, incorporating fantastic elements such as demons and magic. This decision marks a notable shift in Arakawa’s style, who have raised the expectations for the series. Additionally, it is a collaboration with Studio Bones, the same studio that animated Fullmetal Alchemist, which adds an extra level of anticipation for the final product.
The series is already considered a spiritual successor to Fullmetal Alchemist, which implies that Arakawa faces the pressure of meeting the high expectations set by her previous success. However, the first previews have been promising and the author’s followers are eager to see how this new narrative will unfold starting in April. Yomi no Tsugai has the potential to become one of the big hits of 2026 in the world of anime.
