In 2022, the Oscars ceremony witnessed an unprecedented event that the world lived with absolute fascination. On the same night that Will Smith won the Oscar for best actor after a career of trying, the actor from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air slapped Chris Rock, the host, for making fun of his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia.
It’s been a while now and, since it didn’t have disastrous consequences either, it’s all been forgotten and Chris Rock himself takes it as a joke. But the Academy has learned its lesson and, in order to avoid a recurrence of such an incident, new security measures have been taken for the Oscars in 2023.
A measure that has never had to be applied before
In an interview for Time, Bill Kramer, the head of the Oscars, explained that, in order to avoid a repeat of last year’s incident with Will Smith, they have hired a crisis team to take immediate action. In this way, he wants the ceremony to be a haven of peace and good vibes.
“We have a whole crisis team, something we’ve never had before, and we will put other protocols in place after contemplating various scenarios,” Kramer explains. They have never had to take measures of this kind before, but it is a new application that will ensure everyone’s safety:
“Because of what happened last year, we’ve opened our minds to all the things that can happen at the Oscars. So we won’t decide on the fly what group we need to put together, who the spokesperson will be or the format of the statement.”
He is not the only one who has made statements on the matter. The president of the Hollywood Academy, Janet Yang, has also made it clear that this is something they do not want to repeat, and they will do everything in their power to make it happen: “What we experienced last year was unacceptable and our response was not up to par. It was a turning point for us to act with greater transparency and accountability“.
