Netflix is in a year full of ups and downs. The streaming platform started 2023 somewhat abruptly due to its account sharing policy that led to a smear campaign against the brand with the title #GoodbyeNetflix. However, premieres such as the latest season of Black Mirror or the upcoming live action of One Piece have compensated somewhat the balance, and finally Netflix has communicated that it is in a good business year.
However, a new stick has hit Netflix, although it is one that the entire Hollywood industry is suffering and that affects both large studios and platforms and even independent production companies. Yes, we are talking about the strike of screenwriters and actors that has the film industry on edge.
The strike started by the WGA, the Hollywood screenwriters’ union, caused many productions to be delayed because of something very simple: the scripts were not ready or needed rewrites and the writers were not going to work on them. But now the situation has become much worse as actors have gone on strike; many premieres are being delayed and as many shoots have been stalled or cancelled.
Of course, Netflix was not going to be less in this struggle. The American platform is one of those that carries out more productions throughout the year, and although it has wisely managed to decentralize its production and carry out all kinds of series and films in Europe as well as in Asia and other continents, most of its productions are still from the United States.
With this in mind, Netflix has announced the delay of up to six original movies that were to be released this year. In principle, they will all be released sometime in 2024, although everything will depend on whether the strike subsides at some point or the situation improves… something that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon.

This romantic comedy starring Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman and Joey King has been one of the first affected. Netflix had originally planned to release this film in early July this year, but after the strike it was scheduled for November 17, Thanksgiving. However, it will finally not be released this year, and it has been confirmed that the platform has scheduled its release for 2024.
Damsel
One of the most anticipated Netflix movies is Damsel (Damsel), a fantasy film in which Millie Bobby Brown plays Princess Elodie, who discovers that she is not princess material, but rather a tough warrior. The film was scheduled for March 2023, then was delayed to October 13, 2023 and has now been pushed back to 2024.
Lift
This Kevin Hart action comedy had everything to become one of the releases of the year. It was originally going to be released in August 2023, as a summer movie that would be synonymous with success. However, it has finally been moved to January 12, 2024, as well announced at the TUDUM event.
Players
Another film that was to arrive in the fall of 2023 but has finally been delayed until 2024 is Players. It is a romantic comedy in which a New York sportswriter falls madly in love with one of her targets, played by Tom Ellis.
Shirley
Netflix was betting on the Shirley Chisholm biopic as a catapult to next year’s awards. Starring Regina King, this biopic was to be among Netflix’s best of 2023, but has ultimately been delayed until 2024, both because of the strike and its poor reviews in test viewings.
Spaceman
With Adam Sandler at the helm, Spaceman looks to be a further clarification that the actor knows how to do more than comedy. It’s a sci-fi drama about the Czech Republic’s first astronaut, and it looks incredible. However, it will be released during 2024.
