The streaming company kicked off 2023 with one of its most controversial measures in history—restricting the use of shared accounts so that multiple subscribers cannot use a single profile. However, in the end, it appears that this controversial move has actually helped them gain more users than they originally had.
This has set a precedent for other platforms… and Disney Plus could be the next to take this controversial step. Bob Iger’s VOD service is also facing a challenging period; in fact, the company has announced significant cutbacks for the coming years. And, to address this situation, the company aims to follow Netflix’s user-oriented measures.
Goodbye to account sharing
Last year, Disney Plus surveyed its subscribers to understand the reasons behind account sharing. Based on the responses to these questions and their recent financial results, it seems they are finally ready to implement this measure.
Iger has confirmed they are “actively exploring ways to address shared accounts,” so the measure is expected to be introduced during 2024. Furthermore, Disney Plus is not the only platform that may adopt this approach. If the trend continues, Amazon Prime Video or HBO Max could be the next in line to implement similar policies.
Either way, it seems unlikely that we’ll ever return to the freedom of the early days of the streaming wars. Now that Netflix has demonstrated the effectiveness of this policy, it’s only a matter of time before it extends to other platforms.
