Last year, everyone on the internet started talking about Martin Scorsese‘s best film, a forgotten gem you surely haven’t seen called ‘Goncharov,’ an epic 1973 drama starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and John Cazale… that didn’t exist at all. The entire internet, as if in a gigantic Truman Show, pretended as though they knew every minute of the movie by heart. Simply because, once in a while, there’s still a glimmer of hope in this place as toxic as it is global.

Now it’s Pokémon‘s turn to experience the ‘Goncharov effect,’ specifically with the emergence of a new creature that has become everyone’s favorite: Regitube (or, according to some, Regifloat), born in TikTok’s world of shitposting – my mom wouldn’t have understood a single word of that sentence – and has made its way into the mainstream.
It all began on The Tube Shack‘s channel, a Canadian company dedicated to placing tubes in rivers. In August, they featured an employee donning armor made of blue tubes. Soon after, someone had the idea that, with the eyes of the Legendary Giants from ‘Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire,’ it fit perfectly. And after its creation, the obligatory meme modifications began.
The internet, acting as if it were a well-known creature that has been in the game for a long time, has decided its statistics, moves, powers, and even the text that would appear in its Pokédex. From there, the fan art, its pixelation in the Game Boy Advance style, and an explanation of its powers: “Its body is made of a durable yet lightweight material, making it appear to skim over the water. It is believed to have formed after Regigigas went rafting once and wouldn’t stop talking about it.”
And the truth is, considering official Pokémon like Tangela or Trubbish, would anyone really be surprised if Regitube were an original creation of Nintendo?
