Are you a fan of Pokémon Go? Well, Niantic doesn’t want you to celebrate its birthday

I hope you enjoyed it because you won’t be able to do the special anniversary mission or get the shiny Celebi anymore. Why? Well, Niantic hasn’t given a reason.

It seems like yesterday when we all went completely crazy and started going out on the streets to catch pokemons in ‘Pokémon Go’. Now eight years have passed and the game still has 81 million active users worldwide according to Niantic, enough to celebrate its anniversary in a big way, giving players the opportunity to catch one of the most coveted creatures of all: a shiny Celebi. Well. Not all players.

Celebrate with Celebi

Imagine that you have been playing for a long time. So much so that in 2020, the year of Covid, you completed a very specific mission called ‘Distracted by something shiny’. Well, I hope you enjoyed it, because you will no longer be able to do the special anniversary mission or get the shiny Celebi. Why? Well, Niantic has not given a reason.

The good part? You will still be able to hunt the Pokémon with a party hat (there are only two new ones with this outfit, by the way, Grimer and Muk), but forget about the big event of the season, ‘Whispers in the Forest’. However, if you didn’t do ‘Distracted by something shiny’, you’re in luck, because this is a new master research that you can buy for 5 euros from today until July 3rd and it will be long, yes, but it will be full of gifts.

For example: 153 Ultra Balls, three Super Incubators, a bunch of XP, Stardust, and, of course, Celebi right at the end. All of this is great, of course. The problem is that if you have 5 euros, the desire to play, and you already did it in 2020, the game will prevent you from doing so. It’s not just that fans want to give more money to Niantic, it’s simply pure frustration to find that the reward for being a veteran player is… being completely left out of the new features. Let’s hope they don’t mess up for the ninth anniversary.

The terrible Pokémon fan convention that’s gone viral for scamming everyone

¿Es posible que después de la experiencia Willy Wonka los estafadores de todo el mundo se hayan unido para hacer una versión lo más cutre posible de franquicias queridas por todo el mundo para ver si rascaban notoriedad de alguna manera?

Could it be that after the Willy Wonka experience, scammers from all over the world have joined forces to create the most shoddy version possible of beloved franchises worldwide to see if they could gain notoriety in any way? That’s what it sounds like after what we’ve heard this week from Singapore, where Pokéverse has become a frightful platform designed for hating Pokémon.

Pokémon Go DOWNLOAD

It has weakened!

Pokéverse (an event not associated with The Pokemon Company) promised famous guests, activities, “official” licensed merchandise, and many surprises… And, of course, it has provided quite a few surprises. The weekend pass costed anywhere from $43 to a little over $255. For that price, one would expect Pikachu in person to greet you and throw a couple of thunder shocks, but it’s not like that at all.

The two announced famous guests were Veronica Taylor (who played Ash Ketchum for the first eight seasons) and James Paige (the singer of the first English opening). And yes, they were there for the talks and the meet & greets. The problem is there wasn’t much else about ‘Pokémon’: throughout the convention, what fans could see was Frigga advertisizing, a company offering zodiac-based charms, and Kaloscope, one of the NFTs. I don’t choose you.

But you know what? If you’ve paid to go to a place that smells bad and, in fact, offers a bad experience, then what can we do? After all, we are adults, it’s our money, and we have the tools to file complaints and, perhaps, get our money back. The biggest problem is that Pokéverse used several terminally ill children as part of their collaboration with the Make-a-Wish Foundation. And regardless of how good or bad it was, taking immunocompromised children to a place like this makes no sense. The good part? It hasn’t gone quite as viral, so I highly doubt we’ll see a movie about this like we did about the Willy Wonka experience. That’s a nice takeaway.

Beaches have started to appear in places where there were none. And the culprit is… Pokémon Go.

In the maps of the United States, beaches have started to appear that shouldn’t be there because of a single creature.

‘Pokémon Go’ managed to get people who had never moved in their lives to suddenly start walking, and breathe new life into a franchise that was already in pretty good shape. But what no one expected is that it would permanently modify geography. Well, something like that. And it’s because beaches have started to appear on maps of the United States that shouldn’t be there because of a single creature.

There is no beach here, oh well

It all started on April 22, when Niantic announced that Wiglett could appear at any time… but players quickly guessed that it only appeared near beach and coastal areas. Great for spring and warm weather, not so great for those who live in a central location in each country (or in an inland country). Does that mean they would have to travel to complete the Pokédex? Of course not.

It turns out that ‘Pokémon Go’ uses OpenStreetMaps as its base, a kind of collaborative Google Maps where, like Wikipedia, everyone can add their real-life findings. And of course, players started creating new beaches everywhere, even new ones shaped like Pokéballs, so that there is no doubt about who is modifying the topography.

Suddenly, golf courses, playgrounds, and even major roads were labeled as “beaches,” with two interests at stake: on one hand, trainers who want to catch their Wiglett no matter what. On the other hand, the creators of OpenStreetMaps, who believe that this corrupts their original idea and want no errors in their app.

Ash Ketchum didn’t have these things happen to him, to be honest.

Now in Pokémon Go you can find more shiny Pokémon… but they are fake

One out of every 4096 wild creatures is special, and if it escapes, you have to wait for luck again.

If you have ever played ‘Pokémon’ in a way beyond casual, surely the mere mention of the word “shiny” makes your hair stand on end. For years, shiny pokémon have been the crown jewel of any game in the franchise: one out of every 4096 wild creatures is special, and if it escapes, you have to wait for luck again. However, in ‘Pokémon Go’ they have dealt with your frustrations… only to bury them again.

Brilliant, this is what I can do, what do I have left to do?

The latest campaign of the mobile game, Rediscover GO, has already been ruined by attempting to enhance the features of trainers by creating authentic monsters, but now we have discovered that it also causes many more shiny pokémon to appear. The problem is… they are not real. They only give that impression due to the visual enhancements introduced with the update, and your excitement may end up in a pokémon pit.

Niantic has not said anything yet, but it is most likely that they will try to fix it with a patch soon. Good intentions sometimes amount to nothing, and creating your team of shinies will definitely be much more complicated than it seemed. I just hope you haven’t spent a Master Ball on this.

The new controversy of ‘Pokémon Go’ is the ugliness of the trainers

Many are saying that their avatars are now noticeably uglier. It might seem trivial or like a complaint thrown into the void, but the truth is there’s merit to it.

It may not seem like it, but the truth is that there are still millions of people playing Pokémon Go every day. And, luckily, Niantic’s game has continued to improve little by little until it became what it always wanted (and should have been): the closest thing we will ever have to catching Rattatas and Charmanders in real life. But of course, not all the decisions made lately have pleased the fans, who have suddenly found themselves with a controversial update for the most absurd reason. And, for once, the complaints make sense.

Pokeugliness

It turns out that this same Wednesday Niantic has released an update in which, supposedly, it was going to make trainers look more like players with different options to add to the characters. The problem? Many say that their avatars are now noticeably uglier. It may seem trivial or a complaint thrown into the void, but the truth is that it has a basis.

The new avatars of Pokémon Go are not only uglier: in some cases, they are real aberrations. On paper, everything seems very nice: players will have more body options, skin tones, and more, and finally, we will be able to see people with a non-normative body. The problem is that there has been an error (or several) and instead of being a display of diversity, it has made everyone look like they came out of ‘Freaks’.

Faces staring into nothingness, gigantic hands, disproportionate arms, sudden changes in skin tone… Some have said it looks like a flashlight is pointing at their face, and of course, people who have decided to cover their faces from now on. Niantic is supposed to release a way to fix it sooner or later. Until then, it’s better for players not to take the slogan “now your avatar looks more like you” to heart. For the sake of their ego.

Pokémon announces a new collectible card game for mobile… And it will not use NFTs, apparently

It’s no wonder, then, that years after the legendary and memorable card game for Game Boy Advance, ‘Pokémon’ launches again to try to scratch some more money on mobile phones.

If you still see the collectible card game Pokémon as something new, think again, because they have been with us since October 1996. In fact, there are over 15,000 different cards in total, and just to give you an idea, the rarest one (“Pikachu Illustrator”) has reached the staggering amount of 5,275,000 dollars in auction. It’s not surprising, then, that years after the legendary and memorable card game for Game Boy Advance, Pokémon is launching again to try to make some more money on mobile phones.

Get all the cards!

‘Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket’ was announced yesterday during the Pokémon Direct, and although we have only seen a trailer, we can clearly see that it will emphasize online collecting, presumably partly free and partly with microtransactions. Nothing new. But fans were already suspicious, thinking that this could be an evolution. Not of the Pokémon, precisely, but of the NFTs that can be sold at exorbitant prices, creating the usual bubble that we sadly know from a couple of years ago.

Fortunately, The Pokémon Company has responded to the challenge by saying that they do not approve of NFTs and, in fact, if they see non-fungible tokens of the franchise, they are unofficial. In other words, crystal clear. For now, all we know is that players of the Pokémon trading card game, still without a release date, will be able to open two free packs daily. For everything else (and to get the coveted shiny cards), you’ll have to pay. Will The Pokémon Company’s gamble pay off? I, as a fan of the Game Boy Advance game, have to admit that I’m already looking forward to trying it. Watch out, ‘Marvel Snap’.

Pokémon Go started as a Google joke, but not everyone remembers it

Game Freak, The Pokemon Company, Nintendo, and Google joined forces to launch a new application on Android and iOS that involves capturing Pokémon while exploring the real world.

Among the many stories about the beginning of ‘Pokémon Go’ that we can tell (how it revolutionized that summer, how it invented new ways to revolutionize the franchise, how it even made groups of friends), there is one that is usually kept hidden: in reality, it all started as an April Fools’ joke.

Royal Brominches

Since the year 2000, Google has included a lot of jokes on April 1st: the first one was to make us believe that it could read our thoughts and search according to them, only to receive error messages like “Error 4P: It is not clear if your search is about money or monkeys. Please try again”. 14 years later, this system of jokes was so perfected that it was time to launch the ‘Pokémon Challenge’.

Game Freak, The Pokemon Company, Nintendo and Google have joined forces to launch a new application on Android and iOS that allows you to capture Pokémon while exploring the real world. Other jokes from that year included including David Hasselhoff in all your photos uploaded to Google+ (which is none) or WazeDates, an app to find parking and, by the way, love.

‘Pokémon Challenge’ went viral very quickly, and many dreamed of a real, long version that wasn’t a joke. Nintendo, who must have thought that truth comes out in jest, teamed up with Niantic (Tsunekazu Isihara was a fan of ‘Ingress’, their previous game) to create that dreamed version to see if it worked out and continue increasing the dominance of ‘Pokémon’ in humanity.

In 2016, ‘Pokémon Go’ was released, and eight years later we are still receiving updates on one of the most lucrative mobile games in history, a little joke that, to everyone’s surprise, ended up becoming one of the game-changers in history.
