Summer is the perfect time to play video games, as we usually have vacations for a few weeks or fewer working hours. To make the most of that extra time, at Softonic we have thought that there is nothing better than spending it playing with your partner or friends from the comfort of your home, without the need for an internet connection or servers. Grab a beer, some potato chips, and enjoy a good afternoon or evening.
The special article today is simple: 5 video games to play in local cooperative mode with your partner or friends. You will enjoy them a lot.
1. It Takes Two
We start this compilation with one of the best cooperative video games out there: It Takes Two. Developed by the people at Hazelight Studios, the team already has a long and extensive experience when it comes to cooperative games, as they demonstrated with A Way Out (and we could even extrapolate with Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, since it was directed by Josef Fares, the same director of Hazelight’s two works).
In It Takes Two we take on the role of Cody and May, a couple on the verge of separating who see their “souls” trapped in peculiar dolls. The objective will be to overcome the challenges that arise, all of them very entertaining when played cooperatively.
2. Streets of Rage 4
Do you need an introduction to a saga like Streets of Rage? Surely, the answer is no, but this doesn’t mean that we don’t recommend Streets of Rage 4. Released approximately 4 years ago, this fighting game is one of the best in the market not only today, but of all time: it’s fun, frantic, and very original thanks to all its proposals.
With an incredible graphic section and music that is not envious of the originals, this fourth part is perfect for playing cooperatively, especially because of the rivalry you will have with your partner or friends to see who lasts longer.
3. Gears of War
We haven’t specified any particular Gears of War for a reason: they all have split-screen for local co-op play, so choose the one you like the most. Playing Gears of War with friends or a partner is truly frantic, and here’s someone speaking from personal experience after playing almost the entire saga this way with their girlfriend.
The only downside we found to this cooperative game is that split screen can sometimes be confusing with so much blood, bullets, and action. We recommend configuring the effects within the options to make them less noticeable.
4. Portal 2
A classic among classics. That game that must be played at least once in a lifetime: Portal 2. The second part of Valve’s saga is impressive: fun puzzles that require a lot of logic and overcoming platforms in the most optimal way possible.
Although more than a decade has passed since its release, its proposal remains one of the freshest when it comes to playing locally in cooperative mode with another person. In addition, the price at which it usually is, is so ridiculous that it costs you more to order a pizza than to buy it (and this is literal).
5. Super Mario Bros. Wonder
The best-selling video game in the history of Super Mario: Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Hard to believe, right? But it’s true, as it sold over four million units in just two weeks, an impressive number that showed how fun and interesting the game was (and almost 14 million copies sold in just 5 months, another incredible number).
Controlling Mario again in the typical side-scrolling screen, the main difference is that we could also control many of the plumber’s usual friends. And yes, here comes the local multiplayer, as other users can also play on the same screen while overcoming the obstacles that appear.
So far, these 5 local cooperative video games that we highly recommend for a good summer. Do you already have any in your library? If not, we recommend that you follow the order we have given to have a good experience.
