Netflix has announced the development of an animated spin-off titled Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85, which will be released after the fifth and final season of the hit original series. Set in the winter of 1985, between seasons 2 and 3, the new series will take the main characters to face new monsters and unravel a paranormal mystery in the beloved town of Hawkins.
Spider-verse, one of the greatest references
Showrunner Eric Robles presented a first look at ‘Tales From ‘85’ at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where he spoke about the expectations for the new project. Robles commented on the challenges of creating an animated aesthetic that does justice to a world already so well-known by its fans. The responsibility of giving a new look to the animation of Stranger Things imposes great pressure, Robles admitted.
The animation of the spin-off will be inspired by the visual style of ‘Spider-Verse’ and ‘Arcane’, combining 2D and 3D techniques, which promises to offer an innovative visual experience. Since the success of ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, numerous franchises have tried to replicate its artistic approach, suggesting that Netflix is taking advantage of this trend to maintain public interest in the franchise.
Although the presence of iconic characters such as Mike Wheeler, Will Byers, and Eleven has been confirmed, it is unknown what “new monsters will challenge them in this new installment. However, it is likely that the actors who voiced them in the original series will return to lend their talent to these beloved characters, thus strengthening the bond with the audience. With this spin-off, the Stranger Things universe continues to expand, keeping the legacy of Hawkins and its mysteries alive.
