Google has started rolling out a small but practical Gemini app update. The model picker is cleaner now, with a simpler Extended Thinking control, and Android users also get more granular notification settings.
In the model picker, you’ll now just see Extended Thinking. Google is treating Standard as the default, so for a normal reply you’re no longer picking between two modes that felt almost the same.
When you do want Gemini to take a little longer, you can turn Extended Thinking on for prompts that need actual step-by-step work: reasoning through a problem, troubleshooting something technical, or mapping out a plan in more detail.
On Android, notification controls are now split out individually for Daily brief, Scheduled actions, Responses for long-running queries, and Product updates and tips. That makes it easier to keep the alerts that are actually useful and mute the ones you don’t really need.
For people who use Gemini often, this is the kind of update that makes day-to-day use a bit less annoying. There’s less clutter on screen, more control over what pings your phone, and fewer taps between opening the app and getting the response you were after.
It also fits into Google’s broader May 2026 Gemini redesign. Google said that refresh introduced a new visual language, a revamped prompt bar, and a tidier overall layout, arriving as Gemini crossed 900 million monthly active users and kept growing quickly in markets like Southeast Asia, even if public feedback on these smaller changes still seems fairly thin outside the US and Europe.
