The Uncanny Counter came back for season 2 on July 29, 2023, under the official title The Uncanny Counter 2: Counter Punch. So if you’ve seen posts saying K-Pop Demon Hunters is “returning tomorrow,” that’s just wires getting crossed.
Season 2 premiered on July 29, 2023, and wrapped on September 3, 2023. After the first season, which aired in 2020 to 2021, became OCN’s highest-rated original series, the show shifted to tvN for its second run and was trimmed from 16 episodes to 12. Adapted from Jang Yi’s Kakao Webtoon Amazing Rumor, The Uncanny Counter is a found-family action-fantasy drama about a group of Counters who hunt evil spirits after they possess humans. This time, the team goes up against a dangerous trio that has already killed other Counters and taken their powers.
Jo Byeong-kyu, Yoo Jun-sang, Kim Se-jeong, and Yeom Hye-ran all returned. Yoo In-soo joined the cast, while Kang Ki-young, Kim Hieora, and Kim Hyun-wook took on the villain roles. If you liked season 1, this one’s still worth catching up on. It had a gentler start, partly because of past allegations involving Jo Byeong-kyu, which later got messier when an accuser apologized, but the season still finished strong: the finale reached 6.1% according to Nielsen Korea, and the show spent three weeks in Netflix’s non-English Top 10, based on Netflix’s weekly charts. Even so, some viewers felt the writing didn’t land as hard this time, and that the emotional impact wasn’t quite the same.
