BeamNG.drive has been in Steam Early Access long enough to feel like a fixture there, but the driving sim just picked up another major update. Version 0.39 is live now for PC on Steam Early Access, bringing a redesigned UI, a new pause menu, and a substantial graphics overhaul.
That matters more here than it would for most games. BeamNG.drive has spent more than a decade in early access, has reportedly sold around 8 million copies, and holds a 97.4% positive user rating on Steam, largely because players keep coming back for its hyper-detailed vehicle physics. So yes, even a menu redesign is a big deal. Version 0.39 goes well beyond that, with cleaner navigation, better gamepad support, and menus that feel built for controller use first, something many players see as groundwork for a rumored PlayStation 5 release.
The visual side got a serious upgrade too. BeamNG.drive 0.39 adds physically based lighting, volumetric clouds, and a physically based night sky, along with HDR support for Vulkan and Direct3D 12. It also brings physically correct light attenuation and more stable shadows, which makes the game look more convincing across different times of day and all kinds of weather.
If you play BeamNG.drive regularly, this is probably an update you’ll want to download. Just know that the response from PC players hasn’t been entirely smooth. Some say the new UI feels less intuitive with a mouse and keyboard and a little too clearly designed around controller navigation. Others, including players with high-end hardware, are reporting lower frame rates.
BeamNG.drive 0.39 is available now on Steam Early Access for PC.
