AI relationship chatbots went mainstream in 2025. They now offer automated dating advice, apology drafting, mixed-signal decoding, emotional support, and the kind of always-on companionship that’s drawing in more and more users.
Therapists, researchers, and coaches say these bots can help people slow down, reflect, rehearse difficult conversations, check tone, and even work through structured coaching around conflict, boundaries, or self-reflection. What they can’t do is turn an unhealthy relationship into a healthy one. In some cases, breaking up is simply more realistic than trying to optimize the relationship with software.
The market is booming. Some estimates value digital girlfriend apps at more than $2.3 billion in 2025, and nearly half of Gen Z reportedly uses automated dating tools. But a polished text, or an apology written by a bot, isn’t the same as accountability. And constant, always-available affirmation can feed dependency, unrealistic expectations, weaker intimacy skills, loneliness, and social withdrawal.
If you’re using AI relationship chatbots for communication help, they may be useful if you’re careful with them. Policymakers are already reacting: Japan has backed matchmaking software that officials link to hundreds of marriages, China has moved to curb what regulators call excessive emotional dependence, and reporting from parts of Africa shows that voice cloning and deepfakes are making romance scams more convincing.
You can already find AI relationship chatbots across mainstream companion apps and dating assistants. What’s still missing, at least in the research available now, is strong long-term evidence on mental health, dating habits, social skills, and the differences tied to region or income.
