As of August 2026, Donald Trump was still pursuing his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC over the BBC Panorama documentary Trump: A Second Chance?. At the center of the case is a January 6 sequence that, Trump argues, was edited in a way that falsely made him look like he was encouraging violence.
Trump’s lawyers say the program stitched together two clips delivered about 55 minutes apart, while leaving out Trump’s line telling supporters to protest “peacefully and patriotically.”
The BBC has acknowledged that the sequence was misleading and has apologized. But in its March 2026 motion to dismiss, the BBC still didn’t admit defamation. It argued the case should be thrown out on jurisdictional grounds and because, in its view, the claim isn’t legally viable.
If you’ve seen the viral claim that only 285 people in the U.S. watched Trump: A Second Chance?, you shouldn’t put much weight on that number.
The documentary reportedly drew about 1.2 million viewers in the UK. And while Trump’s team says it was available in the U.S. through BritBox, no credible public reporting or court filing appears to confirm any American audience figure below 300.
In August 2026, Trump dropped the parts of the case tied to business losses and brand damage, but his demand for $10 billion in personal reputational damages is still on the table.
The documentary aired on BBC Panorama in the UK and was also available to U.S. viewers through BritBox.
