Rolling Thunder, John Flynn’s 1977 revenge thriller, is streaming free on Tubi and Pluto TV. Top Gun, Tony Scott’s action hit, recently turned up on a free ad-supported streaming service too. Put them together and you’ve got two action movies Quentin Tarantino has strongly endorsed, both ready to stream.
Rolling Thunder was written by Paul Schrader and Heywood Gould, and it’s been a cult favorite for years. Tarantino once called it “the greatest savage, fascist, Revengeamatic flick ever made.” He even named Rolling Thunder Pictures after the film. Interest in Rolling Thunder spiked again after Schrader said his anti-fascist concept had been changed, and after media reports connected Tarantino’s canceled The Movie Critic to Schrader’s original ending.
Tarantino has been just as vocal about director Tony Scott, who directed Tarantino’s True Romance script. After Scott’s death in 2012, Tarantino screened Domino and Man on Fire for students and got emotional. He’s also called Top Gun one of the best-written movies ever made, which stands out even more when you remember that Top Gun got mixed reviews.
If you’re in the mood for Tarantino-approved action, this is a double feature worth your time. Top Gun made $360 million worldwide on a reported $15 million budget and holds a 58% Rotten Tomatoes score. It later led to Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick, which made $1.5 billion worldwide, has a 99% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, and was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars after Tony Scott and Tom Cruise had reportedly discussed a sequel.
