Netflix dropped the 10-episode A Different World sequel series on September 24, 2026, and it didn’t take long to catch on. It’s already at No. 1 on Netflix’s U.S. TV chart. Thirty-nine years after the original NBC sitcom, the new series has also landed in the Top 10 in 12 countries and climbed to No. 9 globally.
This time, the story follows Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, through her freshman year at Hillman College. So no, this isn’t a straight reboot. It’s a continuation, using the HBCU setting to pull in longtime fans while introducing a new cast, new friendships, and a fresh round of campus drama.
Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy are back in recurring and guest roles, which gives the show a real connection to the original while Deborah Wayne and her classmates start shaping Hillman College’s next chapter. Netflix has also shifted the series into a single-camera comedy-drama format, giving it more room to deal with activism, financial aid pressure, and ICE presence on campus in a tone that feels more current.
