Ever since Disney acquired Fox in 2019, the Mickey Mouse company has been figuring out what to do with some of the IPs it acquired all at once, and one of the most notable ones is Alien. The saga initiated by Ridley Scott in 1979 has become, over the years, one of the most beloved by science fiction fans, and the time has finally come for Disney to exploit it.
Following Alien: Covenant, the 2017 film that turned out to be quite disappointing for fans, the saga will be handed over to Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) for a new feature film that has just received an official release date: August 16, 2024.
A franchise in new hands
Although Fede Álvarez’s Alien film does not have an official title yet, it appears as Alien: Romulus in the production listing published by the Film & Television Industry Alliance. This could be a provisional or final title, but it certainly indicates the existential direction the film will take.
As for the plot of the movie, very little is known at this point. We only have a brief official synopsis released by 20th Century Fox, which could apply to any Alien film: “In this ninth installment of the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people in a distant world must confront the most terrifying life form in the universe.”
We do have more details about the cast. The film will be starring Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, Archie Renaux, David Jonsson, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. One notable absence is Sigourney Weaver, who made it clear that “that ship has sailed,” indicating that she will not be appearing. However, this film could still offer an intriguing reimagining of the franchise, which had previously been led by Ridley Scott.
