Amazon is reportedly in talks to take over the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast starting next year, according to multiple reports. If it happens, the ceremony would move off broadcast TV and onto Amazon’s Prime Video for the first time.
The Television Academy is reworking the network rotation it’s had in place since 1995 with ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. Reports say Television Academy chairman Cris Abrego has been talking with both broadcasters and streamers after a simulcast plan failed to come together.
The reasoning isn’t hard to figure out. At the 77th Emmys, HBO/Max and Netflix each won 30 awards, while Apple TV+ took 22. At the same time, broadcast ratings have dropped from more than 20 million viewers to about 7.42 million, according to reports. Even so, those same reports say the latest Emmy telecast still produced 60.9 billion potential social impressions.
If you follow awards TV, this is something to keep an eye on. Amazon would give the Emmys live reach, a much bigger digital platform, and a younger audience. Broadcasters also have less incentive now to spend the night promoting wins by rival streaming services.
If a deal gets done, you’d probably end up watching the Emmys on Prime Video. That would fit with other recent moves, including the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Netflix and the Oscars’ broader push onto platforms like YouTube.
